I saw Pat Buchanan speak to a few hundred people in NH in winter 1991/1992 - not all Buchanan supporters. He spoke plainly and directly, and the audience respected him. But most also understood that he had little-to-no fucking chance to win the whole thing- he didn't care about catering to an audience, about building goodwill with an audience.
He was unentertaining and grim - the opposite of Trump. Never in a million years would you get "It's Rubio!!" out of Pat Buchanan.
Interestingly, I saw Clinton in a similar setting in NH during the same campaign, and he was the opposite - obviously slippery and lacking in integrity just by the way he described his positions - also obviously skilled with people and a political winner.
With regard to political skill, Trump is a lot more like Clinton than Pat.
