Nah, they fucked up when they fought napster/p2p instead of developing their own streaming/download services. Their argument then was that it wouldn't matter if they had such services ("people will prefer to steal it anyway"). With youtube, streaming services, itunes etc. we now know that there are ways to profit even from "free" streaming and that customers will pay for music if it's delivered in an easy convenient manner.

there was so much technological advance that had to occur before the streaming services we have today became a viable option. It's hard to say that these music execs should have seen this coming 20 years ago

Maybe with streaming but there were great alternatives, even then. I remember before they started cracking down on illegal downloads there were websites where you could download a dudes favorite songs. It would be like a cheesy geocities page with the guys collection of songs. The record companies got those shut down and then napster and the p2p's filled the gap. On college campuses you had internal ftp networks where people shared entire playlists. This is all in the early to late 90's.

The record companies' reaction seemed so ridiculous to me, even back then. They could see that these new delivery systems were extremely popular among young kids and they had almost a decade's notice and they couldn't come up with anything?

Oh come on. The record companies had a few billion in cash. They couldn't make a few good acquisitions?

Steve Jerbs understood that the internet was the future of music, but I'm not even sure if he predicted streaming

The argument is they should’ve invented their own iTunes. iTunes is and always has been a lazy piece of shit interface with all sort of problems. The actual business that needed the music itself to be profitable would have been much better situated to work to improve the product. It’s understandable that Apple never cared to do it, since they already had an absurdly generous split of the revenues—Apple got a third of every mp3 sale. This is the same music industry that for decades paid 7 cents per dollar to artists who actually write, perform and market the actual music and literally are the product.
