first thing he tried to do after re-election was rush through a surprise bill to privatize Social Security, out of nowhere. it was really sleazy.

karl rove had bush do a series of "town halls" pushing his social security plan, but they got derailed because reporters kept asking about iraq. and then the GOP congress refused to vote on any specific proposals due to terror over the 2006 mid-terms.

kerry and edwards both voted FOR the war, which is part of what led to kerry's infamous "for it before i was against it" gaffe.

Wrong.

Iraq invasion was 2003. It took about over year for most people to turn against it. Kids didnt start coming home in body bags from IED blasts in large numbers until 2005 and beyond.

Bush was still looking for WMDs in 2004, the search didn't end until 2005.

Bush only won 2004 due to post-9/11 paranoia, he played with the terror alert system, etc. to stoke up fears.

When people realized that 9/11 style terror attacks were no longer imminent they started focusing on the other issues.

there were also individual races where a GOP fuckup tipped the balance, like george allen/macaca, or montana senator conrad burns being linked to the online poker ban and losing enough votes to the libertarian candidate to let tester slip through.

What other posters said - Iraq, Social Security privatization, Hurricane Katrina, Republicans just mindlessly repeating "War on Terror."

The national vibe for Republicans was MUCH worse back then. You could feel the Blue wave in the air. This doesn't feel the same yet
