Went to a large, big-city USAO 2 yrs ago, and 2.5 yrs out of law school. Job has been fun, but not fun enough to justify the shit-ton of hours. So my personal life kind of sucks and now I want to move back to my hometown.

The way that my office works, I can't really get marketable, impressive experience without putting in another 3-4 years.

So if I go back to a law firm now, I will probably be worse off from a career development perspective than if I had just stayed at the law firm to begin with. And of course, I've left at least 400k on the table.

But if I stay the 3-4 years to reap the career benefits, I'm going to be stuck working 60 hour weeks in a high COL city that I don't want to live in anymore.

lol @ lawyers.

That's too bad, brother. Can you cop USAO near your home town? Or chill local DA office? The fellas over at the USAO for ED Wisc might be impressed by your big fancy EDNY work experience.

I applied to an opening in my hometown office (which is also competitive) about 3 months ago. Not a peep. I'm a little surprised that I didn't get an interview. Spot may have been promised to someone before the posting, or all hiring could be on ice until a new US Atty comes in.

There are gs14s and 15s who have non lit advisory roles and are 100% telework bro. Wrong agency.

Yeah, but I actually like the job and find it meaningful. It's just not enough given the personal costs.

But yes, the gs-14 telework job probably would have allowed me to have a more fulfilling life.

Did you not know this going in?

clerkship, 3-4 years in biglaw, as many years as possible in USAO until they make you a deputy chief or something, then back to biglaw as counsel, then pray that you're promoted to non-equity partner, then &c
