Was in a meeting with CEO and heads of other depts. CEO asks how we are progressing on completion of quarterlies. Head of another department speaks up in a way that makes his group look good, however grossly misinforming CEO as to overall shape we are in. I saw the verbal trickery that had been employed and somehow felt it incumbent to speak with CEO privately after the meeting. I took him into my office, showed him my reports on the overall situation, and he started fuming, as much on learning how far behind we really were, as over having been, it seemed just then, willfully misinformed earlier. He called for my supervisor who had not been able to attend the meeting earlier. Now my supervisor had in the interim learned of the communicative discrepancy that had taken place in the meeting, and realized her ass was probably going to get in some trouble for not having anticipated everything. Well, I enter her office to kind of summon her to mine where the CEO was waiting for us, and she is sobbing, on the floor essentially crouching behind her desk. They can't handle any criticism or feedback that's not an A+ gold star perfect attendance card. Most of them got to where they are by fucking other people or relentlessly positioning themselves as the more astute professional, not be actually being better. So any performance criticism creates fight-or-flight ego death panic and they lash out like feral beasts. You might receive passive-aggressive emails for a year for merely suggesting that something could be done differently. IME around 80% of them are truly that fragile.
