I think there were 3 main inflection points in the show
1. The first season was based on the Walsh Family. You can see that in some of the episodes which heavily feature Jim and Cindy. However the kids got so popular that all subsequent seasons featured the gang and not the Walsh family specifically.
2. Agreed that Jim and Cindy leaving was an inflection point. Moreso than Brenda leaving imo. Jim and Cindy were the moral compass of the show. They tried to have Brandon and Nat take that role, but it wasn't working.
3. The gang graduating from college was the final inflection point. School provided them with the structure and drama they needed. Without that, it wasn't nearly as good.

i think brenda leaving was a more marked inflection point than jim and cindy leaving. the central tension of the first 4 seasons was brenda's clashes with jim and cindy. these tensions were possible b/c brenda wanted the seemingly incompatible goals of integrating with the beverly hills lifestyle/ethos and having jim and cindy know about what she was doing and approve of it--hence her insistence of bringing dylan into the family, rather than just keeping quiet about her relationship with him. the battles between her and jim and cindy brought into sharp contrast the contours of beverly hills culture. this dynamic couldn't continue after brenda left, because (i) brandon uncritically assimilated all of jim and cindy's values and was constantly casting judgments on his surroundings rather than seeking to find compromise with them; and (ii) val dgaf what the walshes thought of her, largely didn't tell them what she was up to, and jim explicitly said she was a lost cause and didn't care what she did. Thus, post brenda, there was nobody in the walsh household with whom the walsh parents' ethos could meaningfully interact. unsuprisingly, they were written out of the show shortly thereafter. without their counterweight, the 'beverly hills culture' of the show became much less distinct as a character in its own right, and the show basically became a show about attractive young people in a nice climate, unmoored from any particular cultural/geographic setting. val and claire's tits made the show watchable for a few more seasons, but by season 8 it was pretty much done here.

you know what, i think i agree. great poast.
though i might argue that the tension between brenda and her parents had already started to dissipate in season 4 (1st year of college).
seasons 1-3 and 6-10 are basically different shows.
