Obviously partly drugs. The other part is that Tesla is headed straight for a brick wall. Elon is smart enough to see all paths lead to the same fate yet is powerless to stop it. No amount of guile is getting him out of this fate -- although going private would prevent this being a public emasculation.
Some say that he never experienced the public humiliation that helps leaders grow. As an example, Steve Jobs was very publicly humiliated being ousted from Apple and blamed for the early problems like the failure of the "Lisa" computer. Jobs actually sold all his Apple stock (he'd probably be the richest person by far otherwise), sold all his possessions, and had to find himself. There's a photo of jobs alone in his empty house meditating.
Elon is very thin skinned and has an oversized ego to match. His failures were never public -- he was ousted from paypal but he was able to spin it in his favor. Tesla (and SpaceX) flirted with bankruptcy (in 2008 and 2013) but no one knew of Tesla back then.
He's likely the greatest salesman/manipulator of our generation but his execution blows. He comes up with half baked ideas, but the media had previously fawned over all his retarded musings. Now that Tesla is worth 50+ billion, he and Tesla have received an increasing amount of scrutiny and criticism. There's still a large population that slurps up anything Elon says, but the number of critics is growing -- for very good reason.
There's already a lot written about Tesla but the company is toast. They can do some financial engineering, but they're only delaying the inevitable.
Add to this that he must feel conned by the banks because some of the finances including Tesla issuing junk bonds is one of the dumbest decisions possible for a growing negative cash flow corp with sky high valuation. It's the corporate equivalent of paying off one credit card with another credit card. He must see himself as infallible and blame the entire decision on the banks.

Tesla's destiny is Chapter 7/11. They have over 10 billion in debt, so someone will pick then up out of bankruptcy.
Their only value is the brand. I would think a non car maker is more likely to buy them out. Consider that their image is anti-establishment (anti-gas engine) so they wouldnt mix well with a traditional auto maker.
"Tesla is an energy company" or "Tesla has awesome battery tech" or "Tesla has the best autonomous tech" is terrible flame.
They buy their batteries from Panasonic, and the supply agreement is likely fucking over Tesla because they would be some minimum they need to buy.
Remember that Australia battery installation? Samsung already had mostly negotiated, but Tesla comes in with some crazy underbid. Tesla BOUGHT the batteries from Samsung. Installed it AT COST (i.e., lost money on the project).

Thiel straight up calls him a fraud in his book. Just not in those words. It was more like,
"There are good salesmen, there are great salesmen, and then there's Elon musk."
but then again is it flame if you just keep winning by being a sales fraud?
