Bagram, Eggers and the embassy. The embassy is relatively large a huge base with land offset the center of the city. I say all this knowing there is some chance I eat my words. The Taliban flourished in Afghanistan when they were supported by the Pakistan government (they still partly are). They are all pashtu and Pakistan would rather have a Taliban government to effectively push its border west. We keep the Taliban in check by continuing to offer carrots to the Pakistan leadership to cooperate with us |

it took 2 years for N Vietnam to take saigon after we stopped propping them up, so i think you're way off in your assessment and that the parallels between our role in the two conflicts are very similar. we were trying to win militarily while ignoring the politics (communism and islamism are much easier sells to toothless villagers than abstract things like "freedom and democracy"), so there's just absolutely no way we can win |

Doesn't seem like airpower is able to preoccupy terrorists enough to keep them from planning and training. In Yemen, Al-Qaeda is able to plan worldwide terror. In Pakistan the terrorist havens are just attacking India but it shows they are able to operate even with drones constantly circling overhead.
Not having any conventional forces on the ground is cheaper but it's not going to end terrorism in Afghanistan. |

A CIA drone that kills a terrorist leader in Pakistan weakens the ability of the group to attack India too. But years of drone strikes show that the effect is not enough to prevent terrorists from launching attacks outside of Pakistan. |
