Stray Bullet Kills Woman Sitting On Her Couch, Another Wounds Sleeping 80-Year-Old In Separate Shootings

PULLMAN — Stray bullets left a 44-year-old woman dead and an 80-year-old woman wounded Tuesday night and early Wednesday while they were inside their homes, police said.

At 8:39 p.m. Tuesday, the 44-year-old woman was sitting on her couch in the 8400 block of South Hermitage Avenue when someone fired shots outside, police said. The shots went through the woman’s front door, hitting her in her abdomen.

The woman was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center and pronounced dead, police said.

Hours later, at 1:34 a.m. Wednesday, the 80-year-old woman was sleeping in her bedroom in the 11800 block of South Eggleston Avenue when someone outside fired shots, police said. The bullets went through the woman’s second-floor bedroom, hitting her in her head.

On Wednesday morning, a relative of the victim stood outside the home on Eggleston, waiting to hear from the hospital if she’s ready for surgery.

The man, 50, wanted to remain anonymous to avoid getting dragged into a “war” that’s been happening between groups of young men in the neighborhood.

“The family has been here since 1970,” he said. “[We] never had problems until 11 years ago, then it cooled out, then it recently started back … about a month ago.”

The man said two sons of Ald. Carrie Austin (34th) came by to visit the family after hearing the news. Austin did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Block Club Chicago.

“They are saying something about a war with the young guys in the area,” the victim’s relative said. “It’s been going on quite frequently for a while. It picks up in the summer. You got guys that will drive by and shoot at you, or guys hide in the bushes.”
