The gulf between red areas and blue areas in terms of culture has to be at least as wide today as it was in the late 1850's and early 1860's. It seems that, if things continue this direction, something has to give, right?

Still, I'm thinking it's a bridge to far and nothing happens in our lifetime.

no, the "red" can't thrive without the "blue" and vice versa in our fraudulent ponzi economy

??? I'm not sure if that's true.

I don't think NY needs or cares about the contributions made by South Carolina.

Higher than you think given that the political will to fight a Federal v. seceded states civil war is not there and there is no moral imperative to.

Eg. if Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia, Oklahoma, S/N Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky and West Virginia declared independence right now, I think there would be 10 years of economic sanctions, but then the US would give up.

I don't think there is the will to fight a war against a group of seceding red states. If anything, it would seem that the powers that be in blue states would cheer this.

Two things would seem to be the sticking point:

1. Federal land and military installations. This is what tripped up the last attempt at secession (no Ft. Sumter, probably no civil war).

2. Share of the federal debt. I'm not sure how the remaining states will fee about continuing to be on the hook for a large amount of federal debt while the exceeding states wipe their books clean.

None at all.

No one is willing to sacrifice anything.

Social media lets everyone talk a big game and claim end times are near. When push comes to shove, no one will do anything.

Coastal liberals who've been priced out of major cities have been pouring into traditionally red states. I think this is going to continue.

There are too many incentives to stay in the US and too many ways to economically fuck the states that leave. Plus the American people are too nationalist/patriotic to want to leave the Union. Even Texas, which might be the most logical state to secede, will never do it.
