No, it's not too long. No, Al Pacino doesn't act "too crazy" (he's pitch perfect actually). And no, the side plot with Natalie Portman wasn't pointless. It was the catalyst for the entire climax. And even if it's not perfect, there still hasn't been a better movie about armed robbers since then. Frankly there probably never will be.

180 movie, very rewatchable, I think Pacino does go slightly overboard but Deniro is pitch perfect. The scene towards the end driving through the tunnel with the white light washing over his face is something nearly transcendent.

Its an all time classic imo and pacino clearly acts too crazy and the natalie portman shit went nowhere.

For heist movies after that

1. The town

2. Trance

3. That one where edward norton pretends to be "slow".

4. That one where salma hayak went under the lasers in the 90s

Thats about it.

Thief is right up there with Heat imo. All Mannmos need to see it at least. It has a bit of personal drama like Heat but it's more integral to the plot. In Heat they could cut a lot of that shit and it wouldn't seem like you're missing anything.

One thing that you notice is that Mann knows how to direct a shootout. So many films have unrealistic shit happening like bad guys inexplicably missing and shit, but Mann knows how to direct that shit. Heat is probably the best in that regard.

Heat does have the best shootout. Tight and modern without the split-second jump cuts like in Manhunter and Thief. But Thief is still my favorite - much neater script, happy ending, plus who can say no to Tuesday Weld?

There was a pro crew working in Palm Beach in the late 90s. Dinner plate crew or something the local cops called them. Legit cat burglars - they would jetski or scuba up to waterfront houses around dinnertime, throw a rope up to the 2nd floor, and grab all the jewelry out of the bedrooms, leave by the street. 5 minutes later the jewelry would be in an envelope in a mail drop box waiting to be shipped off to some other state, everyone would be in separate cars driving off.

100% not flame, ask any palm beach cop. I think they were either caught by the FBI or moved on to south america or new york.

Edit : It might have been before the 90s, come to think of it. It's been a while since I've heard the stort
