Never even heard of this city.

Looks like the kind of place that's interesting on paper but you go and it's just 3 things and a bunch of shit.

I haven't done anything on the silk road despite being interested in it

For sure go to Astana and Almaty, then do Tashkent-Samarkand-Bukhara-Khiva-Nukus/Moynoq and fly back to Tashkent. Realistically almost all the silk road stuff you want to see is in Uzbekistan. Turkmenistan is weird as fuck and has some cool stuff but isn't essential. Kyrgyzstan is the wildest of those four and also worth seeing, but not essential. Didn't make it to Tajikistan because it's unstable and ISIS posts up there.

samarkand is 180. bukhara and khiva are perhaps better in some ways bc the sites are all in an old city whereas they're spread out in a modern city in samarqand.

Good easygoing general atmosphere walking down ordinary alleys. Looked like Afghanistan.

Eating lamb at the night market.

Went to the Buddhist caves but most paintings had been taken by Germans and lost in the bombing of Berlin.

Also interesting to look and compare the security situation to Urumqi where there are a pair of guards stationed every 100 meters. In Turpan you almost didn't see any heightened security.

Didn't go to Kashgar because I'm on the cautious side. There weren't many tourists in Turpan. I was in Urumqi/Turpan for 4 days. You can add Dunhuang which is a stop on the same high speed line as Urumqi/Turpan. Skip Hami.

The grottoes are nice to see and easy to get to from Turpan but it is more of a regular mass tourism attraction. I agree Turpan for the atmosphere alone was very interesting and worth it.

eh, ive seen grottos elsewhere.

all the sites in turpan have mediocre reviews on tripadvisor from whiteys complaining about them being disney-fied. did you go a long time ago?

the main sites seem to be the karez well system which looks kinda cool, the jaohue ruins which just look like a pile of rocks to me, the flaming mountains which look like what you can see in arizona, and a minaret which i've seen plenty of. i dunno, is turpan that cool?

"Rumor has it that the local Uyghur population is usually very kind, but our experience was different. We never felt particularly welcome walking around Uyghur neighborhoods. In the true old town of Kashgar, no one would respond to our greetings. People in Tuyoq Valley refused us entry into streets and shrines with cold stares. When hunting for lunch options in Kuche, people just glared at us as we moved towards places to sit, not turning around until we had grown uncomfortable and moved on."

So it's like Israel?
