Obviously, Beltway people blamed Palin for his loss in 2008. In reality, his loss was probably due more to 1) Bush Fatigue 2) War Fatigue 3) Economic Crash under Republican Leadership and 4) Historical Candidacy (Obama) opposing him. Even if people thought Palin was an idiot/dumpster fire, they really weren't "Pro-McCain". I don't remember any Republicans being super enthused about him. They were going to vote for him. But the enthusiasm around Obama...you saw it crush Hillary. I knew McCain was toast.
Still, it begs the question - yes, McCain comes from a proud family. Yes, he was a war hero and served his country honorably. But you almost got the sense did the myth outweigh the man? I am not trying to denigrate him. He is a stronger man than I ever was/will be. He endured 5 years of hell. But, politics is politics and a record is a record.
IMO, HE bears the responsibility for his loss. If he blamed her for being the driving force behind that in any way, it's an example of the misguided thinking that led him to that loss. To ban her from his funeral, when she has only ever supported him and even now, refuses to say anything negative, shows that Palin, despite her decade plus media caricature as a buffoon, maybe has more class than he did.
