i find it difficult to reconcile the enormity of christian religion with the sparsity of the 4 gospels. they raise more questions than they answer, especially about the nature of Jesus. i don't see how the things that are considered today to be a part of christianity actually are rooted in any kind of theology given how little these texts actually give us to work with.
has nobody even bothered to read through these short books in their entirety? or better yet, read them and think about them on their own for any period of time? mainstream christianity is a bloated mess in comparison to the unadorned and powerful gospels.

Everytime I read the Gospels, especially John, I have the opposite reaction: I am surprised by how much of Christianity is actually IN the Gospels.
You're right, Christians have multiplied the complexity of the religion many times over, but most of the basics are in there.
