Usually by the time I get cold called by a prospective client, they've already talked to a couple other attorneys they couldn't afford. Most are just fishing for information. The only reason I'm still in business is because of referrals from other lawyers and from my former clients.
Learning how to be a competent criminal defense attorney is really easy. It's almost impossible to provide ineffective assistance of counsel in criminal traffic (other than DUI) and most misdemeanor cases.
My income varies depending on a lot of factors -- I can go weeks without receiving a paycheck and then all of a sudden get a $10,000 case. Since 90% of my clients are on payment plans with 50% down, it evens out to where I make somewhere between $100k and $200k a year. I've only been in business for 2.5 years, though.
You'll make it if you have a good support network for referrals and case advice. I'm lucky that I have a bunch of really good attorneys (former prosecutors) that I can ask for advice on stuff. |

The family told me they could pay, put 10% down the day after hiring me, and said I'd get the rest by the end of the week. They missed that deadline, and about a week after I asked them what was going on, I saw that notice of appearance get filed. It was the night before a motion hearing, too. That really pissed me off.
