Woman stabbed to death near Logan Circle, police say
WASHINGTON - A woman was stabbed to death in Logan Circle late Tuesday evening in what appears to be a random attack, according to authorities.
DC police said the woman was out for a jog just before 8 p.m. at 11th and O streets, Northwest when the attack happened.
Detectives said the woman, who was identified as 35-year-old Wendy Martinez of Northwest, stumbled into Asian American Chinese & American Food, a nearby carry-out restaurant, where she collapsed.
Graphic video from the restaurant's surveillance cameras shows Martinez running into the restaurant for help as she bleeds from her neck area. Martinez appeared to be trying to alert customers to her attacker outside as some customers ran out of the restaurant. Good Samaritans attempted to help and revive Martinez, but she later died at the hospital. Police said Martinez was an avid runner and was known to run for miles around the city and lived nearby where the attack happened.
Authorities said they’re looking for one suspect after originally stating they were looking for three suspects. Officials said the suspect was a male wearing a mustard-colored shirt, dark-colored pants, white socks and sandals. He fled heading southbound on the 1400 block of 11th Street, NW, police stated.
Investigators said they have not determined a motive, but believe it is likely the attack was random and that Martinez did not know the assailant. The knife used in the attack was recovered nearby the scene, according to police.
Martinez's employer Fiscal Note released the following statement:
"The entire FiscalNote family is shocked and deeply saddened to learn that Wendy Martinez, our Chief of Staff, was killed last night. Wendy was an invaluable member of our team and a vibrant member of the community. Our thoughts and prayers are with Wendy’s family and friends."
