if you don't know how to do basic multiplication in your head (or have it memorized) or understand % differences then yes

I've taken a lot of math/engineering/physics classes and did well in them, but I'm not great at mental arithmetic at all. I usually have to write it out.

to get how few people grasp % change, look at the headlines every time the market swings up or down some new largest daily move in absolute dollar terms.

THE DOW DOWN TODAY MOST EVER IN HISTORY, but of course the swing is like 600 points (2 or 3 %), which is larger than half the size of the index when it was created.

Maybe 10-15 % of the population is capable of passing a calculus course, a much smaller percentage capable of applying it (<1%). Almost no one is "good" at the more difficult math. I consider someone mathematically smart if they can use basic algebra to solve day to day problems, e.g. 3x=15, therefore x = 5, very useful.

Uh literally anyone can understand all level of complex mathematics. its just a matter of systematic oppression. Stand and Deliver the movie proves this to be the case.

what percentage of the population do you think has the ability to apply advanced math that's even more theory heavy than calculus (something like non-linear regression)

in non linear regression you have to pretend like the curve youre fitting is based on the data itself and not what you want the curve to look like. the mental gymnastics required to convince yourself you're doing the former requires a middling IQ at minimum

most calculus as it's taught is plug and chug. if people can't do it, it's because they're ill prepared, not because they aren't intellectually capable. the math education in this country is atrocious.

What do you mean by "not good at math?"

Algebra and below should be absolutely second nature to any smart person. They should be able to do calculations quickly in their head and should have had a really high SAT math score.

But if they didn't do well at Calc or more advanced math? That could in some situations just be not having the drive, desire or attention span.
