Disney CEO confirms a 'slowdown' of Star Wars output
There might be a couple of extra parsecs between future Star Wars films.
Disney CEO Bob Iger has confirmed there will be a 'slowdown' of its Star Wars output, following disappointing returns on the Solo standalone.
'I made the timing decision, and as I look back, I think the mistake that I made — I take the blame — was a little too much, too fast,' he admitted to The Hollywood Reporter.
'You can expect some slowdown, but that doesn't mean we're not going to make films.'
He confirmed JJ Abrams was still busy making Episode IX, while Game Of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss 'are developing sagas of their own, which we haven't been specific about.'
And we are just at the point where we're going to start making decisions about what comes next after J.J.'s,' he added.
'But I think we're going to be a little bit more careful about volume and timing. And the buck stops here on that.'
The news follows a disappointing rollout for the young Han Solo film in May of this year, which 'only' made $393million off its $275 budget.
While the figure is nothing to be sniffed at, by Star Wars standards it was a disappointment for the franchise; the other standalone — Rogue One — crossed the $1billion mark by the time it finished its cinematic run.
Some fans complained of Star Wars fatigue, with the excitement of waiting for a new chapter unable to build as new franchise owners Disney began pumping out one new film per year.
In June, Collider reported that the rumored standalones focused on Jedi Master Obi Wan Kenobi and bounty hunter Boba Fett had been indefinitely shelved post Solo: A Star Wars Story.
Disney purchased the entire Star Wars franchise from its original creator George Lucas in 2012 for just over $billion.
