Maybe you caught the thing a few weeks ago where a couple of failed asylum seekers murdered an ordinary middle aged German guy. There were some demonstrations against Merkel’s open borders, but then some antifa group posts a clip of some guy running after some other guy and declares it all about neo nazis “hunting” foreigners in that city Chemnitz. Mutti Merkel adopts this completely, the media howls along, and suddenly the story is about “neo nazis” not about asylum seekers murdering Germans.
Then the head of the constitutional police (charged with investigating anti-democratic movements like actual neo nazis and antifa communists) gives an interview saying there is no evidence that anything in that YouTube clip shows anything like hunting for foreigners. Merkel freaks out, and within a week that guy is fired, with the media and 3/4 of the public again howling along, declaring this guy to be an “enabler of fascists” and shit like that. Freedom of thought and democracy are fragile concepts with shallow roots in Germany
