There’s zero rational reason if it’s below the FDIC limit. Pick up I bonds too if you want zero risk.

fair. i'm stashing enough to pay mortgage and necessities for 6-12 months and will come out slightly ahead by staggering cds and keeping only 2 or so months' worth of expenses on hand in the checking account, but it'll probably only amount to a few hundred dollars

That's what bothers me. This requires an amount of effort and care that doesn't justify the payoff. At that point, you're better off having less in instruments that don't keep up with real inflation and instead have a good mix of equities that are likely to pay significantly more.

It's called a credit card doofus. Assuming you don't have shit credit, you need about two months' bare minimum expenses in cash that can be accessed same day. The rest should be in SPY, real estate, or a diversified equities portfolio.

I'd rather have 2% 100% risk free and liquid. If I don't need to touch it for a year, I'll throw it in dividend ETFs.

So basically burning $2k/year in cash by keeping it in a 0% acct.

That said, I'm not sure about keeping even $100k in a 2% because real inflation is probably 3-4%.

Is she a housewife? No way a person has never heard of those big name banks or thinks a savings account is risky ... unless this is code for not wanting to have to “save” money - savings accounts aren’t really different from checking in terms of liquidity, tbh.
