Could be something that evolves, or could be something manmade and difficult to treat or destroy that gets unleashed.

Either way, it doesn't get much attention these days but I bet a serious disease outbreak could be the Big One.

It's happened before during the Black Death.

I don’t think that could happen today. Technology is too advanced.

God tried it with ebola, but we were able to thwart that pretty easily.

"technology is too advanced"

to invent something unstoppable or fast.

Oh, you are suggesting a terrorist or someone else will intentionally develop such a disease? That’s interesting. Yes, I agree this is possible, but I think it’s extremely unlikely when faced with the alternatives of a nuke or (more likely) an EMP attack instead.

Why spend all this time and energy developing an unstoppable super virus that will probably end up killing you when you can far more easily disable your enemy’s power grid and kill tens of millions through starvation instead?

If the goal is to just harm terribly, then I agree. But if the goal really is as evil as "total wipeout"--suicidal impulse at a species-level--then they'd be more inclined to try something like a pandemic.

It's highly unlikely that a pandemic could wipe out humanity unless it were specifically and precisely engineered. The optimal long-term survival strategy for human-hosted pathogens involves some degree of survival of the human host. In a sense, you'd need to have a *mal*adapted pathogen spring up and work quickly enough for extinction to occur. Something like an airborne variant of ebola and even then the odds of complete extinction are minimal. It's generally rare to see species wiped out because of a pathogen. There are a few examples (some species of frogs) but it's not common. The plague (yersinia pestits) is probably the closest we ever came to this in the era of recorded history; those outbreaks were horrible (estimates for French population loss for the 14th c. outbreak are as high as 75%) but even that didn't come close to doing the deed.

You would need something yhat’s highly contagious but lies dormant for a long time. I agree it would more likely be engineered than occur natirally

It'll be something that isn't realized until it's too late, like what diethylstilbestrol did.

It was a synthetic estrogen given to pregnant women to prevent miscarriages. It made their daughters infertile.

it's already happening with Morgellons. if the government acknowledged it's existence, it would cause mass hysteria.
