I just got back from the first ever Same Same But Different Music Festival. It was held in the Lake Perris state park and we camped for two nights. Bands played for two days.
I notice a lot of the bands were from San Diego. Three of the bands were from Ocean Beach which is a hippy little beach community in San Diego.
One of the first bands that played on the second day, this shitty band called Modern History started talking about the festival. The lead singer kept saying "fuck" after every other word.
"About a fucking year ago, this fucking friend of ours said he was going to have a fucking music festival and we said get the fuck out of here you fucking idiot and now look! He fucking did it! Last night we had Lettuce!"
That got me thinking. He booked a couple big acts, not major, but big enough. Lettuce and the Floozies headlined each night.
Then they filled the lineup with a bunch of smaller shit bands from San Diego.
They didn't merchandise it properly. They didn't coordinate with the bands to sell anything. There were only two food vendors and one alcohol vendor.
Made me realize that *I* can do this, too. I'm going to do it bros.

I'm thinking I may need a million dollars to pull this off.
What about coming up with some shitlib cause so that bands (who are notoriously shitlib) will agree to play either for free or for cheap and then we donate some of the profits to charity? Like 50%?

What about a festival to stop global warming?
I could contact a solar power company and see if I could get them to power the entire festival with solar power.
I'll hold it on Summer Soltice, the longest day of the year.
Then I can contact a couple environment non-profit groups like the Sierra Club and tell them they are going to get 50% of all the profits so they have an incentive to promote the festival for free.

I've got the name of the festival. Summer Soltice Slam.
I've got the date chosen. June 19-21, 2020.
I've got a couple potential locations. Sent emails to two of them.
I've got a running list of bands I'm thinking of inviting.
Once I get an estimate of the cost I can then start soliciting bands and sponsors.

Bros, help me out with a shitlib cause.
I need a good one. One that will be so good that no shitlib band would think of charging a fee to play.
I think I'm going to go with a state park as the venue. Waiting for a special events application.

I was born and raised in NJ and when I was 19 my friends and I jumped the fence to see Steve Miller Band. Back then, literally everyone owned Steve Miller Band's Greatest Hits and could recite every lyric from every song.
The fence around Waterloo was a shitty, little 2-ft high wooden thing that we rushed as a stampede of around 100 people to overpower the security guards that were arresting people trying to jump the fence individually.
I almost got trampled in the stampede, but we made it in and it was an epic concert.
Waterloo erected a 6' high chain link fence after that.

I think it would be weird to hold a "Save Yosemite" festival in SoCal. It would make more sense to hold it in Yosemite.
I could do a "Save California's Parks" but that doesn't have any sex appeal.
I need sexy.

I am looking for a cause where the bands would want to play for free.
They just a festival an hour north of here on a state beach in Orange County and they donated a portion of their proceeds to the state parks.
I need SEXY.

Orphans of Opioids
It will be a scholarship fund and you'll also work to open up a small world class K-12 in San Diego for the orphans of opioids.
Can hand out free needles, Narcan, etc.

Just got an email from the special events coordinator for the state parks in San Diego County. She asked me a bunch of questions that I answered.
I moved up the potential date to Friday, June 21, 2019 which is actually the start of Summer Soltice that year.
I think it might be possible to get this done in less than a year. I think a lot of bands still aren't booked through June 2019 yet.
I NEED A GOOD FUCKING CAUSE AND YOU BROS ARE *NOT* HELPING.

I've got a running outline of everything I need to do. LJL at people who actually write out business plans.

Chilmata, homie. What if the proceeds from the festival were split between battered women's shelters and drug rehab facilities?
This is the kind of shit that would get bands to come out for a big discount I believe. Could also get vendors like craft breweries to donate beer rather than sell it to you to serve to attendees.

Fuck the charity. I think I can do a small one in the stadium parking lot and make a small profit. Check out my math:
With a budget of $100K, I can break even selling 5,000 tickets for $20 each.
Thinking of making the tickets $60 each for a full day of music during earth's longest day of the year: summer solstice!
The cost of renting a quadrant of the stadium parking lot is $7,000.
I figure around $10,000-$20,000 for non-band expenses leaving me $80-$90K to pay for bands.
What do you bros think?

Here is some more math.
If I sell 5,000 tickets at $60 each, that will gross $300,000.
I can have a budget of $200,000 and still make $100,000.
I thought of a couple more locations last night that should be a lot cheaper than the $7k they are charging for a quadrant of the stadium parking lot.
The cheaper the venue, the more money for bands. The better the bands, the more tickets I sell.

I've thought about Petco Park but that would be much too expensive.
First, I want to hold this on summer solstice which is in the middle of baseball season.
The cost of bringing this inside would be crazy. TTT Qualcomm Stadium charges $15k or 10% of ticket sales, whichever is greater and they have some exclusive contract with Ticketmaster.
Now, imagine what Petco charges to use their stadium during baseball season.
I already read on their website that promotors have to pay for field protectant and a bunch of other crazy expenses.
I have two ideas in mind where I know they allow festivals and will be very cheap, comparatively.

Waterfront Park is a great spot. People can easily take the trolley. And $2,000 is ridiculously cheap AF.
Can you serve beer/wine there? Would be cool to involve some of the small garage-type craft breweries.
I'll check-in with my wife this weekend.

Ok, I got it. I know what is going to be different about this festival.
There will be two main music stages with music on one stage at a time. While one band is playing on one stage, another band is setting up on the other stage.
There will be a CENTER STAGE which will have modern/interpretive dance performances while the bands are playing.
Regardless of what stage the band is playing on, you will be able to watch the dance show and listen to the band.
At SUNSET (remember this is a festival celebrating Summer Solstice) I will get one of the native Indian tribes to put on a tribal dance on the center stage AS THE SUN GOES DOWN.
When the sun goes down, we light the center stage on fire and it becomes a BONFIRE for the remainder of the festival (summer solstice celebrations around the world often involve bonfires).
It will go from noon to midnight.

Fuck baby steps and I'm sick of hearing that advice. I'm going BIG.
The baby step is that it is only going to be a one-day festival instead of the three that I originally planned.
So given that I'm taking the BABY STEP of only throwing a one day festival, it is going to be a fucking YUGE, awesome 180 festival.
Go have your own baby festival somewhere else. Here is some baby food for you...

I'm thinking baby steps might not be a bad idea.
I was thinking of registering an LLC with a name like XYZ Promotions, LLC.
Contacting a couple venues to get an idea about costs and then reaching out to some bands to get booking details then putting on a show. Learn from any mistakes and try to move on to something bigger.

I emailed my special events application to the venue I want.
I filled it out online and when you type a sentence it starts out with this gigantic font that gets smaller with each keystroke as you type.
So under special requests it says really big: "Would like to turn the center stage into a bonfire after sunset."
Not sure how they are going to take that.
