The hoaxer told Mensch's co-writer Claude Taylor in an email that she was a woman named "Caitlin" who worked in New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman's office. She claimed the office was investigating Trump's modeling agency for sex trafficking.
"Taylor asked no questions to verify my identity, did no vetting whatsoever, sought no confirmation from a second source—but instead asked leading questions to support his various theories, asking me to verify them," the hoaxer told the Guardian.

"Although Jordan Mansfield, e-journalist and viral video reporter at large for the Sedona Post Courrier, was initially please to receive the anonymous report of monkey poisoning activities by the respected Washington, D.C.-based Democratic PAC, her pleasure turned to dismay when she learned that the 'tip' that had been fed to her and led to the 10 million+ view story was, in fact, fabricated.
What follows is a tale that sounds straight out of a Hollywood noir novel, though the outcome was anything but fictitious. Taking matters into her own hands according to the federal indictment, Ms. Mansfield brokered the services of a renowned Middle Eastern mercenary group known as 'The Hand of God' with expertise in both physical assassinations and electronic warfare. The group was able to track the source of the false information to an internet connection associated with an apartment in Bethesda, VA owned by James Tezos, a 23-year-old manager at the local Chili's.
Ms. Mansfield arrived at Mr. Tezos' apartment sometime in the early morning of Wednesday, January 3, 2018. What follows is a tale of torture and terror that left a young man with an over-the-top sense of humor and a bright future in restaurant management in literal pieces inside a deep ice chest in the back of his garage."
