Trump the populist cut taxes for lower classes and funded it by raising taxes on the elites and closing the budget deficit during boom economic times as fiscally prudent?

Dude. Your OP said it was "just tax cuts for the 1%." And unless my RN niece is a 1%'er, you're full of shit.

And some of my colleagues who actually are in the 1% have actually seen their tax liability increase due to the Trump tax cuts (I'm talking about senior biglol partners in CA).

Son, the top 1% pays 40% of all fed income taxes. The top 5% pays nearly 2/3 of all fed income taxes. The bottom 50% pays about 2%. It's apparent that math isn't your strong suit, but it seems that any across-the-board tax cut would necessarily affect higher income earners more because they pay all the taxes.

Well by definition an across the board tax cut would. Why not raise taxes on wealthiest and lower it for middle and lower classes? Or get rid of carried interest to fund lowering it for middle and lower classes?

Is it really necessary to give massive cuts to people who are already ultra wealthy when we have a massive spending deficit?

A couple of points. First, as I noted above, the "wealthy" already pay practically all of the fed income taxes anyway. The bottom half of income earners only pay 2% (two percent!) of all fed income taxes. Hard to do much cutting there.

Second, Ocasio-Cortez/Bernie tax policies (i.e., mainstream democratic tax policies) wouldn't do shit to the deficit. The only thing that will fix it is reducing spending. That's my major beef with Trump. He has no interest in cutting spending (and to be fair, he campaigned as a lib on spending, so I'm not surprised).

So why not cut it entirely for bottom half and make a huge positive difference in their lives? As you note it barely makes a dent and you were pontificating on how important 200 a month has been to your niece.

You're also sort of begging the question of why the ultra wealthy pay most taxes. Do you know why that is?

Actually, I think that's a terrible idea and leads to a moral hazard. Everyone should have some skin in the game--even if it's not much. If you don't pay any fed income tax, then you aren't going to give a shit about increased taxing and spending because it has no impact on you.

Like the old Maggie Thatcher quote about socialism "it's great, but eventually you run out of other people's money."
