People like to say this but it is bullshit. Cars cost the same in NYC and Columbus, Ohio. Student loans are the same too. Yes, housing is very different in cost. Food isn't THAT different. An $800k house in a nice NYC suburb would cost roughly $200k in nice Columbus suburb. This doesn't translate into the difference you seem to think it does.

You don't necessarily drive it every day. When I did have to reverse commute out of NYC every single day, I realized that it was time to leave. Nevertheless, even before that I liked being able to go to real hiking locations, take road trips, and do basic things like easily take my sick dog to the vet and do grocery shopping, etc.

I always owned a car in NYC, but aside from which, the comparison is NYC suburbs to a place like a Columbus suburb. Both are going to own cars.

"food and housing are both SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper in flyover"

Food is not significantly cheaper. I visit family in places like Columbus, Denver, Atlanta, Clearwater, etc. - it all costs within 20%.

"a 300K house in flyover would prob cost 1.2-1.5MM in NYC suburb"

Not really. My parents own a house that is close to $300k in flyover. It would be worth maybe $700k in an equivalent NYC burb.

Because there are better jobs in major cities, which is especially important when you have 2 people all looking for good jobs. Plus, you still have big city amenities and the culture that comes with living around a top-tier city.

And it isn't about "not making it in the city." It is about wanting a house and a yard and not worrying about stepping in bum shit when you go outside. Also, clean air and being able to take a nice luxury car and avoid the objectively disgusting subway are nice bonuses.

"HR people at big law firms make 200K bro"

Do you mean the head of HR? In any event, they don't hire washed up lawyers for those roles.

"120K in flyover is like making 600K in NYC"

You are unlikely to even start at that. I have a family member that does this. No grad degree and for this area and you don't really need one. You'll be competing with pretty girls from big state U for lower level positions. For higher level positions you're simply not competitive (you have no skills or experience or background that they care about), and those big state U girls with years of experience will be insta-hires over you.

all of this assumes OP is a remotely attractive woman

If you are former biglaw, biglaw firms will look at you over non-biglaw. Or you can try for some other job, like CLE coordinator, etc.

Some of these jobs pay six figures for no work and no stress or any real responisbility.
