LBJ told Arthur Goldberg to quit the Court and go be UN Ambassador because he wanted Abe Fortas on the Court. Fortas wrote LBJ's 1966 State of the Union speech while a sitting justice. Johnson basically worked side-by-side with Fortas to make sure all the Great Society shit wouldn't get unconstitutional-pwned while it was being written. It was absurdly corrupt.
Then LBJ tried to make Fortas Chief Justice, and almost got away with it. Strom Thurmond found out about a small payout Fortas had gotten from American U for a seminar that came from private funds and filibustered.
Fortas eventually quit the next year after another ((($candal))) and came back to argue several times in front of his old co-workers |
