It has an adjustable air suspension. The article didn't specify, but those types of systems almost always have an off-road mode where it'll jack the car up a couple of inches

Jag and Land Rover outsource their engineering to the same parts suppliers used by everyone else. In 2017 the difference between manufacturers is entirely in assembly line tolerances and not design because they basically design nothing by themselves including the engines which are all designed by little 20 man specialty shops in Austria and Canada you’ve never even heard of.

Yes, you're counting defects in cars that are brand new where it should have pretty much no defects. If you can't build it right to begin with, that doesn't bode well for the long term. Also, that's your best estimate for how well this year's models are built.

No, I think I'll buy one car that I can use well in both scenarios rather than have two totally different vehicles that suck in various circumstances.

But what you're missing is that I'm perfectly happy with solid speed/handling but not "absolute fastest" and solid ability to handle the off-roading I'm likely to do but not "need a Wrangler with a lift and massive tires."

Looks? They don't look great, imo. If I wanted "looks at the expense of, well, everything else" I would get a used Ferrari or something. I have no idea what I would do with it, but that would be my approach.

But since I buy cars to use, I get something that does what I need it to do. And yes, I do get it. I need it to handle deep snow (the kind that normal sedans can't), can take me to whatever hiking trails I want, can go through basic flooded roads, etc. Yes, I've had AWD sedans before and sports SUVs are just better at doing the things I like to do.

GLCs have C-Class level luxury accouterments, you can't compare them to top of the line luxury vehicles. They're more comparable to decently equipped highlanders.

They're kind of a different animal though. Yes, the interiors aren't about luxury, it is about budget performance. For example, you can get a GLC 63 AMG, which for a high-speed SUV is one of the best deals out there.

The highlander is about being a safe, reliable family hauler for not too much money.

My point with that is that no one is having the GLC as the practical, sensible but boring car to be combined with a performance SUV. It fits better as the performance SUV.

BMW SUVs are just sports sedans with a bit more space, slightly higher/greater ground clearance, etc. I realize that the X6 50i is going to be a level below the Jeep Grand Cherokee I currently have, but for most use cases it'll be perfectly fine and be far better than a 5 series.

the lack of a third row in the x5 and mercedes/audi equivalents is pretty TTT, tbh. ridiculous BMW thinks this $80,000 monstrosity is fulfilling that niche for drivers/families who need a 3rd row in their SUV when they can just go out and cop an acura MDX that's just as nice as the x5 for $40,000ish.

They have 3rd-row seats but they're sort of cramped and really only for small kids/part-time use. Giant luxury SUVs are always seen as the ultimate decadent purchase and always carry an enormous premium. Consider that a Lexus LX is actually more money than this thing.
