I'll tell you what it is. It's being educated beyond common sense. Academia is infused with a type of narcissism and sense of superiority, where they must tow a certain line to advance in their careers and social circles. It's self-reinforcing. They can be "bright" and totally have a lack of common sense.
Example, that Wild Wild Country documentary on Netflix. The people who joined the cult were a lot of ex yuppies, smart professionals, lawyers, business people. "Successful" by any modern standard. Yet they bought the cult's bullshit, hook, line and sinker.
The townspeople of the town where they moved were simple, religious, run of the mill people without much education who lived simple, quiet lives and viewed the cult with much suspicion and confusion, though they even initially welcomed them if they didn't make trouble (which, of course, they did). The people you describe are overly educated and overly confident, but in a sense extremely naïve. They believe their own myth. They become too detached from what is simply common sense to most people and then run into trouble.
