NYUUG gets one thing really wrong about Korea.
Koreans are generally superficially polite, more or less quiet and neat, and well-behaved in public.
This has absolutely nothing to do with being civilized or because Korea is somehow more advanced as a society.
Literally 99% of Koreans were literal slaves of the ruling class until the end of the 19th century. They did not have last names (family names), no hereditary passing of belonging, and could be raped and murdered at will by the ruling class. There was no middle class to speak of. It was either ruling class, or peasant trash. The end of the Yi dynasty was immediately followed by Japanese colonialism. Although the actors changed, the subservient role remained the same for the vast majority of Koreans, except that this time, the women were sent off to serve as sex slaves, and the men were sent to the mines as slave labor or had their head's cut-off for katana practice.
After WWII, you'd think things would improve. But not. Korea has had one authoritarian regime after the other until things began improving in the 1980s. Things have gotten much better now, but Korea today still suffers from:
1) Children being taught to conform from day one. They all attend the same schools, read the same books, watch the same TV shows, listen to the same music, take the same courses and extracurriculars. Doing anything different is viewed as doing something wrong, and parents will freak out if they're not doing something some other parents are doing. It's not a matter of keeping up with the Jones, rather, it is doing everything by the book (hint: there is no book, just a bunch of parents trying to guess what other parents are doing).
2) Upon reaching manhood, every Korean male goes to the military, where they are beaten, sworn at, and basically reminded everyday that they are a worthless piece of shit. If a Korean man had any vestiges of independence or rebellion left, it was certainly killed shortly after beginning their military service.
3) After the military, every Korean male begins the horrific rat race of trying to get the best GC job they can. During this process, where it's standard that there is maybe 5 spots for every 10,000 applicants, one wrong move is a death sentence and you are relegated to being some shiftless contract or temporary employee for the rest of your life.
4) Once these men get these jobs and begin, they are immediately reminded of their role, working in a very strict heirarchy which demands obedience through an ungodly number of layers of corporate structure. Advancement is strictly by age and seniority. Talent is meaningless. Opinions are frowned upon. How dare some lowly junior try to tell his senior how to do his job better? One wrong move results in being Office Spaced without a stapler.
5) Oh, the women. They don't do the military, but the women of Korea make sure that other women are conforming and playing by the rules. They do this through incessant gossip, drama and abuse of girls who try to be different. And just in case women forget how they are supposed to act, they are bombarded on social media and television with countless examples of exactly what girls are supposed to look like and how they are supposed to behave. And where to buy the necessary products and accessories to achieve GC.
In conclusion, Koreans aren't more civilized. It's just that Korean society has brought peasant mentality to modernity. This is what modern day feudal society looks like. You have a few upper-class elites who are running wild, and the vast majority are huddled together in fear, trying their best to do what they're told, be where they're supposed to be, think how they want you to think and behave the way they told you to behave. The current grandparents generation were raised in this environment of fear under Japanese colonialism, and they taught the current parents how to survive by conforming and keeping your head down, and these parents in turn have taught today's young men and women similar lessons in peasantry.
It's tragic yet comical to see. Because the brainwashing is not 100%. You still see glimpses of the "real" personality from time to time. Like step on someone's shoe and say "fuck you I stepped on your shoe" and they will chimp out at you, revealing that they are no different from some black guy in the Bronx, screaming and swearing and causing a scene. But the moment you apologize, their survival instinct will immediately kick-in, and they'll bow, and walk on their way as if by some inner programming.
Is this civilization?

I havent been to dinky abandoned mining towns, but places like Cleveland, Dayton, Detroit, Pittsburgh, yes.
I think those places are 180. They produce some rugged All American Navy SEALs and Green Berets. And have traditionally great sports teams.

America for all its faults has never elected anyone as batshit crazy as Park.
-is either taking a nap or getting some spa treatment during a national crisis as a ferry carrying 400 high school students capsizes, and can't be interrupted for several hours despite pleas for help from high level governmental officials
-hires an uneducated literal fortune teller to handle high-level policy decisions
-instructs fortune teller to coerce bribes from corporations
Hollywood couldn't make this stuff up.

You honestly can't see it?
They'll get on some big boat, they'll get turned away from Italy, they'll get turned away from Spain, so they'll start sailing towards the Statute of Liberty. En route, they'll be resupplied and refuelled by a willing armada of shitlibs with supplies.
Then Trump will be forced to turn back war refugees who are parked literally in front of the Statue of Liberty. Good luck with that.

That's a ridiculous comparison. Korea has been politically stable for almost the entirety of its history, with a clear ruler in place.
Somalia suffers from having no centralized control and warlords running wild. Korea never had that.
Also, Korea received an insane amount of US money which Korea did put to good use (thanks to its clear central power).
But economic development has nothing to do with the state of civilization of the people.

They are probably the "legitimate" Koreans in my opinion.
Yeah it's too bad they sided with the Soviets during the Japanese occupation. But their original leadersehip were men who were fighting in the mountains alongside their Chinese brothers against the Japanese.
The Southerners basically either collaborated, or ran away. The few who fought back did so in a big beta way, writing newspaper articles and sparking demonstrations. Only a few actually violently resisted, all while the Japanese were literally raping their neighbors and enslaving their family members. Cowards.

ok, i believe what you say about korea, though out of curiosity, i looked up wiki and it seems like far from 99% of the population were slaves as you claim.
The nobi system declined beginning in the 18th century.[15] Since the outset of the Joseon dynasty and especially beginning in the 17th century, there was harsh criticism among prominent thinkers in Korea about the nobi system. Even within the Joseon government, there were indications of a shift in attitude toward the nobi.[16] King Yeongjo implemented a policy of gradual emancipation in 1775,[4] and he and his successor King Jeongjo made many proposals and developments that lessened the burden on nobi, which led to the emancipation of the vast majority of government nobi in 1801.[16] In addition, population growth,[4] numerous escaped slaves,[3] growing commercialization of agriculture, and the rise of the independent small farmer class contributed to the decline in the number of nobi to about 1.5% of the total population by 1858.[8] The hereditary nobi system was officially abolished around 1886–87,[3][8] and the rest of the nobi system was abolished with the Gabo Reform of 1894.[3][17] However, slavery did not completely disappear in Korea until 1930, during Imperial Japanese rule.

Korea had a fairly simple caste system. You had the ruling class, then you had an awkward not-literal slave but basically slave (like share croppers), then you had the literal slaves that you cited. The latter two classes lived in abject poverty.
I don't feel like digging up the research, but right before the Japanese occupation, something like 1% of the Korean population had family names, meaning, any kind of right to property and inheritance.

Yeah that's my point and I agree with your assessment.
My OP was a rebuttal to NYUUG stating that Korea RIGHT NOW is civilized and the poeple RIGHT NOW are 180. It'll be another two generations or so before the system changes, but that will depend on a further weakening of conglomorate control over the minds of the people, and a further rejection and toning down of compulsory military service.

No, Koreans are more obsessed with BTS, baseball and the latest pop trends.
Most Koreans these days don't know all the old customs and in fact, are trying to get rid ASAP b/c it's a huge pain in the ass.
They don't even teach proper history in school anymore. It's all focused on cramming for exams with a massive influence on math and english.

I mean, I think that's the same in every country. Normie Japanese also way more into AKB48 and Arashi than anything historical or what not. But what matters is that they're around and yeah, a lot of the upper-middle class is into them if they wanna seem elite. You see that in India, Japan, etc.
that compares bigly with China and the USA/UK, where the countries in theory have a good cultural heritage, but absolutely nobody in society gives a shit.

Americans are proud as fuck about their history. How many war movies are made each year about military heroes? A recent movie just came out celebrating Neil Armstrong. Countless movies about WWII, the Civil War, historical period movies about the founding fathers, etc.
History is one of the most popular majors in any college.
Most Korean media is about some rich kid and a poor cinderella and a vicious mother in law.

I don't see why that's relevant to most people. In the United States, most ppl can't even cop 1 average girl in their entire lifetimes and those that can are usually the target of intense jealousy and called Chads.
a system where reasonably attractive people are so plentiful that even normies can cop a reasonably attractive person with a reasonably decent personality is basically an fantastical paradise compared to this hellscape.
I can see USA being preferable to a turbo elite turbochad, but Korea's cultural mindset, for all of its failures, is probably better for 90% of people than America.

no, I understand what you're saying completely. you're right about your experiences obviously and thus of anyone in a similarly situated position.
what I mean is that's not what most people would get to enjoy though. like YOU get 100 normies + a gold gem every once in a while. average American gets either absolutely nothing or disgusting hambeasts in their entire lives. the average american male will never fuck a 4+.
like your argument is basically "its awesome when the quality of women is worse, because it makes it actually a chore for people like me at the top to cop one". Which is true. But that doesn't still make having high-quality woman a bad thing.
it's like tanking developed industrial society because being idle rich is toxic to the mindset of uh, really rich people

We may have a different definition of middle-class.
My view of middle class is some family making $100k or HHI, a decent house in the suburbs, maybe a pool in the backyard, doing the usual family stuff like BBQs and sleepovers.
You don't have any of that in Korea. Most Koreans are cramped in shitty rentals in shitty places and do nothing but work and drink, and kids are just always studying. I guess you can call that a middle class, but I consider that closer to indentured servitude.

I think you're overreading just generic Korean MAF-ness with peasant social status whatever. Korean MAF-ness has a long history and it's also correct that countries with a lot of inherent MAF-ness actually end up more polite (as to prevent people from going buckwild on each other). Southerners are typically a lot more MAF than northerners, which is why southern whites are so polite (and when you're not polite, like southern-descended blacks, oh god oh u get this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pj9Hzs-vBLE).
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hwabyeong is basically the Korean version of this

But I think it's worth pointing out that Korea is not some perfect country filled with amazing people.

A lot of your stance is just grass is greener syndrome.
i.e. critiques of neoliberal koolaid, conformity, "inequality"
Some of it is glass half empty syndrome.
i.e. women, feigned civility
Weakest premise is w/r/t "inequality". Post-Westphalian Order Korea has always been more "equal" than most Core countries and I use this in the empirical sense i.e. Gini CoE.
Other things you have wrong: 족보, etc but these are irrelevant to your larger critique.
I've seen the cumskin world at it's best i.e. Norway (A much finer example of "peak" cumskin civilization than the French Caliphate). You know damn well that Korea is literally doing better than 99% of the world right now.
