His TC looks impressive, and it’s fine for a single guy. However, he needs a spouse that adds at least $150k TC to have the “nice” things I listed above. |

My dad is retired and is 70 but still codes for fun in his spare time. He's an MIT grad though and has always loved coding, which he learned completely on his own since he studied hardware formally.

People salavating over these so-called chill coding jobs severely underestimate the interview rigor and highering standards these top companies have both to get in and stay. A lot of them get shown the door where they trade off their “FB/Google ‘Alumni’” pedigree and bounce around Uber, Pinterest, AirBnB, etc. where they continue to make good money but it’s hardly riveting. You’re going to work with tons of H1Bs, have liberal art shrews from LACs be your “technical product/program manager”, forced to drink culture koolaid on a daily basis, daily “stand ups” that prevent you from totally slacking off...I could go on, but it’s hardly sexy and certainly not prestigious.
For people who are attorneys, becoming a Product Counsel >>> any fucking programmer (excluding the rare staff/principal architect types). You work with tech teams but they all are very deferential because you’re an attorney and legal at most tech co’s has a surprising amount of weight and power in the .org structure.

Any physician at UCSF, Stanford Hospitals, etc. is going to get right-swiped all day on apps, regardless of salary. A rung down from that, but still way above run of the mill programmers are “tech attorneys” (product, privacy, security, regulatory, policy) because it’s seem as a someone technically competent but not totally nerded out. Also, don’t underestimate how much women value a guy who has any semblance of a professional wardrobe. They see sloppy dressed programmers all day; a tucked in collared shirt and some 180 selvedge denim puts you way ahead of most around here.
