My wife and I have a running "joke" about this song. When we first met the topic of the song came up and she was shocked that I considered it a sad song. She still claims to this day that it isn't a sad song-- I think she is just being stubborn, but she is kind of weird.

You and one of the hardest fuckers I know. Dude cries like a bitch whenever Isbell plays Elephant.

I can't remember ever crying over music (never been much of a crier in general), but Isbell's songs have more of an emotional pull on me than maybe any others I can think of. Particularly the ones about working/small town life.

saw the Truckers on a two-night back to back bill with My Morning Jacket at the Fillmore in SF many years ago.

Incredible shows. Isbell was still married to that blonde bass player and the two of them killed a bottle of Jack Daniels between them on stage as the show went on.

Yes. They are must haves. I like Brighter Than Creations Dark too -- with a great sad song on it, "Two Daughters and a Beautiful Wife"

They have a lot of great sad songs. Two by Isbell:

But I ain't dreamin' anymore, girl, I'm waking up

So I'll take two of what you're having and I'll take everything you got

To kill this goddamn lonely, goddamn lonely love

Agreed on the nostalgia. Depending on the mood, reminds me of a girl I wish I'd done things differently with, or makes me wanna sit in a parking lot with the windows open and watch the stars with the windows down. It kind of made me nostalgic even before either of the things now attached to it happened though.

Anything by Nick Drake

All of Nick Cave's "The Boatman's Call"

"Send in the Clowns" (despite it being sort of an overwrought, lampooned song, it's lyrically flawless, and pretty damn sad). Check out Judy Collins' version.

"Hello, I'm in Delaware" by City & Colour (anything by him, really)

"Wild Horses"

A song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity and the importance of trends - it's also a personal statement about the band itself.

was thinking about this thread and the song "Hey Ya" by Outkast came on the radio. I actually listened to the lyrics. That song is really sad.

Buckley's Hallelujah seems pretty sad, along with John Prine's Angel from Montgomery, but I'll go with Coltrane's Wise One, final answer.

I will say this in favor of Prine's song, more than once women have wept when I sang and played it on guitar for them. There is something about this song that seems to affect them deeply.
