you shouldn't keep too much cash in bank accounts. even high yield savings accounts are lagging behind the fed funds rate by 0.25% or so, so you're experiencing a constant 0.25% drag relative to what you could get by investing in t-bills. you can get t bills through an etf or buy a prime money market fund.

long term, foreign stocks look like a higher expected return bet than us stocks. im talking 5+ years. so you could add vxus to your etf portfolio.

he's right. you can estimate long term expected returns by looking at earnings.

us stock investors had a freakishly good 20 years from an earnings perspective. margins expanded and taxes fell big time for stocks. if government policy ever shifts toward breaking corporate monopoly power or raising taxes, stocks will get slammed hard.

started from a very low base thanks to the financial crisis.

add in ultraeasy monetary policy, fiscal stimulus, corporate tax cuts, and no recession since then, and you get a bull run.

a crude measure is the 200 day moving average.

the market tends to whipsaw around that, so it gives a lot of false alarms. confirming negative momentum w deteriorating economic fundamentals reduces whipsaws.

not necessarily. many are showing insane growth. some of the repricing may be due to interest rates spiking up as the far off cash flows from growth stocks are more sensitive to rises in interest rates (in theory).

i think btc will continue to chop around. no crazy bull run until people forget about the massive raping they just endured.

40% crypto

20% stock (mostly index funds)

20% high-yield fixed income (through closed-end funds and a mutual fund--exposure is partially tactical as i bought when discounts gaped)

20% cash (t-bills, and a 5% 7-month CD)

yes, i use some algos to trade. my strategies are low frequency, though, as i don't have any edge in forecasting or exploiting short-term price moves.

rebalancing is overrated. if you do it every year or two you'll be fine.

enjoyed our conversations before.

I've seen you mention closed end funds twice recently. what is the appeal to you?

i get CEFs are trading at a discount and such. attended a moderately convincing webinar today on high yield CEFs.

it would be something i'm watching closely and probably exiting in 12-18 months

EDIT: I mean if I owned any high yield CEF, it would not be something I see holding for 3+ years.

cefs sometimes trade at irrational discounts b/c they're largely owned by retail investors. recently some cefs have begun selling at attractive discounts, but over the past few days those discounts have tightened rapidly.

cefs are mostly for trading, not buying and holding forever.

ISD/GHY

yields over 7%, discount of 15%, owns mostly BB and B high yield bonds, some modest leverage on top.

i bought some and almost perfectly bottom ticked it through dumb luck.

yes.

for savings acct--liquidity and yield. when the fed funds rate was 0%, hy savings accounts were the best place to stash cash. now that the fed funds rate is 2.25% and rising, banks haven't been raising their yields on hy savings high enough.

i bonds and ee bonds are crap nowadays.

reits are actually reasonably priced relative to the stock market, but i wouldn't characterize them as safe high yield. lots of interest rate exposure and cap rates are low.

he did have a bunch of hedge funds originally. then he liquidated them with the intention of retiring from money management, but rolled his own money into berkshire hathaway, which he had started buying up through his partnerships.

for reasons he can't explain, he bought his first insurance company through berkshire hathaway. buffett said if he could go back in time he would've bought it directly for his partnership, not for berkshire.

tl;dr berkshire hathaway was a yuuuge mistake

I have a bunch of individual securities and I've already lost my ass on most of em. Should I take my losses at EOY and just reallocate into ETFs and never make this mistake again? Or just hold and never buy individuals again?

take your losses and immediately reinvest in index funds. the least you can get is a tax loss to offset gains and a bit of income.

don't try to time the market using your gut feeling.

chances are you'll always want to dabble in individual stocks. set aside a separate account for stock picks.
