Actually he and Hillary's state department fucked up the timing of negotiating the deal to allow the US to stay longer. They did not plan on leaving when we did. Once they fucked that negotiation up, they were to pussy to just tell Iraq to fuck themselves and that we're keeping troops their anyway.

One of the most epic fuckups of all time.

I think you’re missing that the Maliki government was a sectarian shitshow that made no progress toward forming a functioning government. Obama was rightly pissed that we’d have to stay there forever keeping the entire thing together.

I think the feeling was that we had to show we wouldn’t be there indefinitely. Problem was we underestimated how unprepared these idiots were to run their own country

I’m not missing the point. my point is that Obama made a horrible decision and misjudged their security capabilities

Leaving at that point was 100% the wrong move (though it’s unclear we would’ve actually stopped Isis from happening - the sectarian grievances would’ve still been there). No argument there.

Only saying it’s easy to see why a president (particularly one that campaigned on gtfo of Iraq) would decide to do so. Hindsight is 20/20...

to be really fucking fair,

who could’ve expected the iraqi army to drop their billions in us arms and run at the first sight of isis? isis scared the fuck out of everyone to the point that they’d take over territory despite being outnumbered 1,000:1

any disciplined army would’ve annihated them. the iraqis weren’t that.

even McCain predicted problems back in 2008

“If we withdraw prematurely from Iraq, al Qaeda in Iraq will survive, proclaim victory and continue to provoke sectarian tensions that, while they have been subdued by the success of the surge, still exist, as various factions of Sunni and Shi’a have yet to move beyond their ancient hatreds, and are ripe for provocation by al Qaeda. Civil war in Iraq could easily descend into genocide, and destabilize the entire region as neighboring powers come to the aid of their favored factions. I believe a reckless and premature withdrawal would be a terrible defeat for our security interests and our values. Iran will also view our premature withdrawal as a victory, and the biggest state supporter of terrorists, a country with nuclear ambitions and a stated desire to destroy the State of Israel, will see its influence in the Middle East grow significantly.”
