a couple thoughts
1. The Crime Dog is getting a big boost in his final year. It won't be near enough to get elected, but he's getting some love for a good career. Query what % he'd have with 7 more HRs and thus a member of the 500 HR club. I'd have to think it wouldn't matter, but who knows.
2. Larry Walker has also received a huge bump in his 9th year. He's currently at 66.5%. It might be an interesting vote next year if Walker ends this year above 50%, though I think he still falls short.
3. Mussina holding nicely at 82.9%. If he's going to have a chance for induction, I think he can't need more than 60% on the non-public ballots at the end. Given that ~75% are usually revealed, he needs to be at 80% or above on the released ballots. If he's there, I think it's a coinflip.
4. Anyone voting FOR Mussina and not for Schilling is doing so purely because of politics, and that's repellent.
5. Omar Vizquel is at 36.1% currently in his 2nd year on the ballot and was the only player to get a very significant bump last year from the non-public ballots. Omar Vizquel should not SNIFF he Hall of Fame. He was a good defensive shortstop, but he was not otherwise a very valuable player. His career WAR at 45.6 is low, and his career WAA at 5.3 is abysmal. He has good counting stats, but those were helped by playing poorly in old age. His last 6 seasons had an aggregate WAR of 0.6, and without those he doesn't even have 2500 hits. |
