Kids can be encouraged to try new foods to develop their palates or to potentially find their new favorite food. While kids should be taught some basics about nutrition, especially that it is helpful for their bodies to eat a wide variety of foods, this can easily become another good/bad dichotomy. There is no such thing as good or bad (or “dirty” or “clean” in the current trendy parlance) foods. The food that one should choose at a given moment is totally contextual and depends on the needs, resources, and desires of each person at the time.

Movement and exercise should be fun, and kids know this instinctively. As a disabled person I am not able to move too much, but the rare times I am able to be more active I share the joy with my kids. Once again playing shouldn’t be a chore.

Remember that at the end of the day the goal is for them not to have conflicted relationships with food. When I was trying to open my kids horizons to new food and there would be conflict, I would tell myself “I would rather they eat chicken nuggets for three meals a day than have a fucked up relationship with food”.
