Couple months in to a 425k in house job. What a huge lifestyle improvement over biglaw. All the fun parts (advising business teams) with none of the bullshit (entering time, line editing SPAs, etc), and hours are so much better. Also lost 15 lbs, now that I'm not stress drinking 3-4 times a week. Thanks to poasters who encouraged me to take this opportunity when it came up.

7 years. I was told I had a pretty good shot at making partner in a couple years. Partners were surprised when I left. But all of the current partners seemed unhappy, overweight, prematurely aged. Extra zeros in my bank account didn't seem like a good trade for mental and physical health.

Yes. Life of an equity service partner seems unappealing. You have to seriously hustle to stay in the good graces of M&A/cap markets rainmakers.

Boutiques, yes. Worse comp until you build a book of business, and then you're still making in the mid 6 figures. Different work, and if I end up feeling like there isn't enough challenge where I am, I'll probably angle for boutique, even if I have to take a pay cut. At this stage, I'm more focused on having a job I enjoy than maximizing comp.

Less than big firms or big 4. But there is definitely pressure to do more writing/nonbillable work to generate clients. My sense is that it tends to be significantly more predictable hours, which likely improves QOL, even if the total number of hours isn't THAT much lower.

Not sure how much sense that makes. No public company is going to do a spinoff without a tax partner involved. But maybe they route the high profile work to other offices?

Service level agreements with the business. At banks legal has to report all kinds of idiotic metrics like average times to respond to emails and how many emails you get a day. They measure how busy even senior level lawyers are to determine staffing and the metrics are idiotic shit like # of emails or shit like # of sworn docs executed in a month. Its idiocy.

That sounds pretty annoying. I didn't go to a bank because it felt like I would become a despised control function. Didn't realize it came with additional downsides like metrics.

This actually sounds worse than just billable hours. God damn.

this is a good message for all the strivers on this bort to hear. a lot of them are so money and prestige obsessed that they are focused on the $780k/yr, 45hr/wk in-house gig. once your priorities are set right, you realize that the $425k/yr, 30hr/wk, Th/F WFH gig in a chill college town is really all you need. congrats on giving up the rat race, op.

The exception doesn't disprove the rule. There are way more rich self employed bros than super highly paid employees.

Nutella's boss (and Nutella for that matter) are way more uncommon than a self employed bro making seven figures. How many in-house lawyers make 800K vs how many ambulance chasers. There are a ton of guys like me making crazy money working out of a tiny office with like 2 support staff. If you go visit an unscale neighborhood like hidden hills or the oaks in calabasas or even my neighborhood, the majority of the homeowners are self employed. Obviously not all of them, but the majority.

Not sure. Big asset manager. Lots of desire to do deals, so most of the hiring is for transaction oriented roles.

Atty in financial sector making a move in a few weeks to another financial firm. The pay is decent for the city (non NYC) and (appears to be) equivalent to your salary given CoL. So congrats. That's huge.

At my current gig, I work at an open office set up and it's ok. I really hatethe lack of rooms/phone booth to take calls. Also ppl can be pretty fucking loud which makes it difficutl to concentrate when reading mind numbing docs. My noise cancellig headphones are amazing.also, lack of privacy sucks. So I can be readinf DailyMail and now have to worry about some sidebar article showing some celeb in skimpy bikinis and getting HR pwnd

New place has an office with a window, which will be a welcomed plus. The office definitely looks more like a law firm than some 21sr century swearshoo.

An attorney tied to a particular business unit or product that becomes one of the go to attorneys for product development/expansion. So, for example, the business unit I support is expanding into a new country and I am helping it get licensed, set up regulatory/legally, and prepare any related docs, e.g., agreements, etc. If litigation happens related to my line, I become the middle person for that business and our lit attys. Think of it as a mini GC atty for the line. I have a team of attorneys that negotiate contracts, NDAs and they come to me to ask if something is permitted from a legal, product perspective.

Completely open office. Much less annoying than I imagined, but I’d still prefer an office. Face time doesn’t seem to be important. Boss works from home 1-2x per week, and otherwise shows face between 11 - 1 pm.

As someone who literally slept in my biglaw office during the middle of the day, I assure you that I know the value of an office. This was one of my biggest concerns when I made the move. Ended up not being nearly as big a deal as I thought it would be. Silver lining is when you see everyone taking off at 5-6 pm, you feel like you should be leaving too.

This level of comp is really rare outside of those markets and maybe Chicago and Houston. I'm in a large metro area that isn't one of those and in-house roles over $200k are pretty few and far between.

Live in burbs. Commute isn’t great, but better than it used to be, and actually very clean and pleasant environment. Would be shorter commute if I weren’t saving 50% of income.

Honestly, with the benefit of hindsight, office vs open floor is significantly less important than other things.

Tax bro here so this thread is highly relevant to my interests. Many congrats brother.

Have some questions. Please answer what you think are the least doobsiest:

-market (Bay Area/nyc/Chicago)

-any sort of specialty to speak of (international, private equity, m&a (you mentioned spins))

-were you recruited by big 4

-size of new employer

-whether you’re in legal at your new employer or tax

Chicago > NYC > Bay Area from my perspective.

M&A/P&E/ very good for exit ops

Got a few calls from big 4 but doesn’t make sense for most big lawyers who have a decent chance of making partner at a firm. Money not as good, hours just as bad.

New employer is a big asset manager. Tax treated as key part of getting deals done.

I’m in tax, and I work on transactions. Wouldn’t want to do legal. Tax is more connected to economics, which makes it more fun.

Not personally, but we are involved in structuring and helping business settle on appropriate tax rates for pricing models/exit plans. Legal obviously plays big and very important role in executing transaction, but it’s different — more about allocation of latent risks and broader diligence issues — and doesn’t interact with the business teams in quite the same way.

I imagine legal can be really fun for the right person/company, but tax seems more interesting to me at mid-career level of seniority.

I work at a small asset manager (under $100b aum) but we only invest money. No deals. I can tell you if you want your own office and more money down the line, best to move in house at a mid size or small asset manager where you can get equity and overall back office overhead costs are lower so more bonus money to go around for you. But you’d also have to move out of tax and do more general legal work. A Blackrock or oaktree will never pay as well as an artisan partners or canyon partners, for example.
