On early Sunday, December 9th, a white student approached a group of students comprised of mostly Black women in front of Butler Library and harassed them with aggressive white supremacist rhetoric. Afterward, he followed these students into a dining hall, targeting other groups of Black students to antagonize them and even went as far as to assault one Black woman. This student has a history of targeting students of color with confrontational behavior while intoxicated even though he is underage. According to witnesses, there was one uniformed Public Safety officer on the scene who did not intervene to de-escalate the situation.

This institution’s history of enabling hateful sentiments that targets marginalized students is storied. Columbia University promotes and idolizes this ideology of Western imperialism through its educational canon. The Core Curriculum propagates continued tolerance of hateful speech. Last year, a series of white supremacists were invited to speak on campus despite vehement opposition from student groups.

These events have fostered a hostile environment for Black students. Since this particular incident occurred, Black students have faced increasing amounts of isolation and stress during finals. Black students have been bombarded with requests from media outlets. Black students have had their personal information leaked. Black students have received death threats.

The Black Students’ Organization demands that the University pursue disciplinary action against this student, as he has proven himself to be a threat to the safety and well-being of students of color on this campus. We also demand the University take steps toward ensuring that this kind of rhetoric is no longer supported by the Core Curriculum, and instead revised with a more diverse and inclusive education. More specifically, we demand:

·Disciplinary action against the student involved, specifically separation from the university to show that assault and harassment are not only illegal but incongruent with Community Standards.

·Extended finals period for affected students due to the detrimental environment resulting from this incident.

·Protections extended from the University for the students receiving threats resulting from this incident.

·President Bollinger clearly define the distinction between free speech and hate speech in the context of the University.

·University Senate implements hate speech definition and consequences in the Rules of University Conduct.

·An increase in funding for Black faculty recruitment initiatives through the Office of the Vice Provost for Faculty Diversity and Inclusion.

·Leaders of the Black Alumni Council and Black identity student groups should be involved in these recruitment processes.

·This funding should be also used to fulfill vacancies of Black faculty in the newly formed

·African American and African Diaspora Studies Department:

·Revised Under1Roof workshops to more adequately address issues of racism and anti-blackness, led by trained professionals from outside organizations.

·Mandatory online training for racial inclusivity, similar to the Sexual Respect and Community Citizenship Initiative.

·Revision of the Core Curriculum:

·Mandatory inclusion of more Black authors in Literature Humanities and Contemporary Civilization courses.

·The incorporation of scientific racism into the Frontiers of Science syllabus.

·Public Safety revises and improves its de-escalation and racial bias training to ensure that they are better equipped to protect students of color.

In an email to the student body following the incident, Mary C. Boyce, Dean of The Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science, Lisa Rosen-Metsch, Dean of the School of General Studies, and James J. Valentini, Dean of Columbia College and Vice President for Undergraduate Education stated “We are alarmed at the rise of incidents of racism and hate speech in our world today. It is more important than ever that we continually demonstrate our core values and restate our commitment to a diverse, inclusive community on campus. At Columbia, we stand firmly against white supremacist language and violence. As we said last week, our community will not waver in its support for those of any faith, race, gender, sexual orientation, background or identity.” If these sentiments are true, then this instance is an inflection point where the University can decide on which side of justice it stands. Compliance with our demands will ensure that the student body’s values are truly represented at the highest levels of our University.

Upon further reflection, I feel like an idiot: they're almost certainly using "white supremacist rhetoric," rather than "racial epithets" or "he called us all niggers," because he said something in his 'drunken rage' that could easily be said by a GOP congressional candidate in a scripted speech on the campaign trail.
