Fuuuck the further we get from 9/11, the more apparent it is that 1999 was the peak of civilisation. 12 identical games, each more badly-reviewed than the last, jfc.

Sad that Sonic as a franchise has suffered the fate that it has, but not that surprising. The reason the early 2D games were so good is because of the limitations of the 16-bit platforms. "Go really fast and try to be smooth about it" doesn't hold up as well today with the range of game mechanics available on current gen systems.

They could just chill and make a 3D game where the entire game has you bascally holding up going through loops like the first level of Sonic Adventure, but they won't. It would be shallow but it would be chill af. Like almost like a racing game. You could use more complex mechanics to fight the bosses etc. They always introduce these weird secondary characters and make you play as them for longer than you would Sonic. I mean, probably, I've played like 1.5 of the 12.

You don't even really go fast in the original trilogy, it's just filler sections in between platformy sections. But the speed mesmerises your eyeballs and is cool but it often pointless. Like they never really make YOU be fast, in terms of reflexes.

there are plenty of great recent 2d platformers: Rayman, Mario Bros U, Super Meat Boy, the various Metroidvanias like Hollow Knight, Dead Cells, etc. It is my favorite genre of video game because the focus tends to be on tight game design and stylized visuals.

edit: nevermind, I misread your point

Idk but I too am under the impression that that is the case for some reason. I assume kids still buy the games because he's blue and colourful. Don't know why he would even have a "fanbase" of actual adults although Mania was pretty tight imo.

That is taking it too far... I still enjoy 2D Sonic more than 2D Mario I think. Like I don't think I've ever had any desire to replay a Mario game - maybe grudgingly after like a decade or more - but I've replayed Sonic 2 like 50 or 100 times (it's like 30 minutes long or something).

Absurdly bad opinion. Mario games have aged incredibly well and are simple but with tremendous variety and deceptive depth. Sonic is a memorization game with annoying physics.

You don't even have sex, gtfo my thread. You have never played Sonic. The games are actually easy af and there's no memorisation needed at all. Awesome things in Sonic:

Multiple routes through levels so no playthrough feels the same

Chaos Emeralds/bonus stages

He frees animals from imprisonment

Drowning

Music

Epic Bosses versus shit bosses in Mario

Granted, once they went to 3D, all bets were off - Mario 64 was touched by the hand of God; whereas Sonic Adventure was cool for the first 5 minutes and the next 12 games were cool for the first 5 minutes but the rest of it was shit. 3D Sonic probably gets laid as much as Charles XII; 2D Sonic SLAYS

Sonic Generations is actually an amazing game. It's split between old school 2D levels and 3D levels in the Sonic Adventure style, with NONE of the stupid bloat like open world story quests and werehog levels. And you can actually download all of the good levels from the other 3D Sonics and play them inside of Generations using the new graphics engine. It's the definitive Sonic game.
