Toilets - must be the worst in the world - diarrhea sprayed up the walls, blocked, no stall doors, even just 2 feet wide, 30 feet long channels in the floor (with no separating walls) with a 20 feet drop down to years of piled-up effluent. Yes.
Poor food quality - including the possibility of eating cooking oil that has been recycled from sewers. Yes. It is not uncommon.. and many other food quality issues, including fake red wine and even fake cigarettes!
Lack of manners - people are generally very selfish in China, and will push in front in queues, push you out of the way, drive through red lights, anything to try to beat the next person. As a tourist, you generally get treated better, but not always, but the Chinese seem to generally resent/ hate each other.
Shouting - people will sit apart and shout to each other rather than sit by each other; people sitting by each other will also shout to each other. I’ve always thought there must be something wrong with Chinese people’s ears - it is the loudest country in the world, including:
Car horns (and terribly selfish, aggressive drivers in general) that are used constantly to say ‘get out of my way’.
Lack of English - even though every Chinese that graduates from High school has spent 10 years studying English, the lack of English spoken in the whole country (outside Shanghai maybe),is shocking.
Poor (international) tourist infrastructure - things are there for domestic Chinese tourists, like trips, car hire, easy transport etc, but very little exists for foreigners.
Pollution - absolutely terrible air pollution in cities, water pollution in some previously beautiful lakes (ie Kunming), noise pollution everywhere, visual pollution from rubbish and half-finished construction projects everywhere.
Costs - China is not a cheap place to visit any more. I went to Japan from Wuxi (a ‘second-tier’ city near Shanghai) and was very pleasantly surprised to find prices for most things in Japan (including hotels, but not bullet trains) to be much cheaper than China.
Lack of traditional ‘Chinese culture’ and proliferation of McDonald’s and KFC: Where I worked in Hangzhou there were 5 KFCs within 150 metres. That is not uncommon.
People only caring about money. |

It is the height of GC. There is some good food but you can find 80% of that quality in SGV. There is also no point in visiting Shanghai or any large Chinese city. Beijing has the historical sites but very underwhelming mostly with terrible pollution.
What is cool about China is if you travel beyond the coasts and go to the Silk Road cities and interior provinces like Sichuan, guizhou and hunan, and the famous yunnan province, you will find some truly spectacular natural scenery that you won’t find anywhere else. I’ve gone all over Asia and SE Asia in my travel shrew days and yet to find some of the scenery I’ve found in China elsewhere. There is also plenty of hiking and mountains off the beaten path outside of the usual tourist spots. |

Beijing, shanghai, chongqing were surprisingly nice, contrary to what my Singaporean relatives told me before I went. I was very pleasantly surprised by Beijing. The great wall is steep as fuck. Loved visiting "old Beijing". The pollution was no worse than NYC when I was there. NYC is much dirtier than any city I went to in the mainland China.
I still prefer SG, HK, TW to mainland China, but its worth visiting imo.
