Get into the synthetic diamond game for the sole purpose of (1) lowering prices as much as possible and marketing them as costume jewelry ("Lightbox" lol); (2) trying to maintain and reinforce an ignorance-based public conception that synthetic and natural diamonds are totally different, non-competing products; so that (3) it can continue to mine and sell natural diamonds as a luxury good without direct competition from synthetics.
I mean, I guess this is *basically* what they've been doing for forever (most notably with CZ), but synthetics are chemically identical, and can be made to be far, far superior to naturals -- as diamonds get larger, they quickly start to have occlusions.
This strategy won't *just* require an uniformed consumer base to remain forever uninformed -- I get that luxury goods don't really "make sense" ever, but keep in mind that in theory consumers for a 4- to 5-figure product are going to be more sophisticated than average. It will literally require them to reconfigure the entire diamond mythology. E.g., Like I just said, synthetics can be made to be far superior to naturals, and the only way to tell the difference is usually the lack of occlusions in the synthetics: okay, so start shilling some bullshit about "well you have to appreciate the natural flaws inherent in truly natural beauty! The flaws are part of what make diamonds diamonds!!" Or whatever. But then you're basically ditching the entire "4 Cs" schema for evaluating diamond quality (Clarity = lack of occlusions), which has justified higher prices for less-occluded diamonds for forever. You're increasingly able to synthesize larger diamonds than natural ones, as well; is there also going to be a DBG-style push for "classy, elegant natural 1-carats" over "prole, oafish, synthetic 2.5-carat double-Ds"? |

De Beers announces its going to start manufacturing synthetic diamonds -- surprising every other diamond company, because they've always shat hard on synthetics -- and then continues to shit hard on synthetics in the same breath. Dude as much as says that he's doing it to help drive down the price of synthetics (which have heretofore been marketed based on natural-diamond prices) in order to cement the natural and synthetic lines as being separate classes of product -- which consumer studies show that the public already thinks currently, but which would almost certainly change once better information gets out.
They're deliberately tanking the synthetic diamond market, I guess out of recognition that De Beers will never be able to stave off competitors and monopolize a manufacturing process the way they have a mined product.
EDIT: The De Beers subsidiary that'll be marketing the synthetics is called "Lightbox," and they're going to heavily market ridiculous-colored diamonds, and use some advertising tagline like (without looking at the article again) "When your little girl just want to have fun, get her a Lightbox synthetic!" |

Date: March 25th, 2019 11:52 AM Author: Know-it-all Green Piazza Scourge Upon The Earth I said it was desperate, and I think that's true, but the De Beers problem is a fundamental one (people can now make in a lab a product that is identical to the one you've been hoarding and mining and selling at an ultra-premium since Cecil Rhodes's day), not one based on them making poor business decisions or anything (De Beers, if you're not aware, may literally be the most overtly ruthless >11-figure company on earth). Synthetics still have size limitations, but they're falling away fast, and De Beers probably figures they've got 5-10 years to set the table for their last stand.
As a strategy, honestly it's bold as fuck. |

The "facts" generally coalesced into 1) real diamonds are different, 2) the diamond industry employs lots of people in undeveloped countries (lol), and 3) real diamonds keep their value as investments.
This makes a lot more sense now. |
