With $100 airline credit that brings overall cost to only $30. Amex giving chase some serious competition. We will keep CSR for 3x overall travel and not just airlines, but seems to me if you wanted one travel/restaurant card, Amex is now better than chase. Lots of people vacation at the same places every year (Hawaii, some winter vacation, visit family for holidays etc). Especially once you have kids, you don’t have the same flexibility in where you go and what times of year you can go. For those people, theres little difference if you book it 11 months in advance versus 4 months in advance. Before kids, I had even greater flexibility and could book in advance for any number of destinations so had even better use of the points.
You make it sound like it’s a struggle to get good redemptions for points. I’m just saying it’s not that difficult to do and is not that much of a hassle once you figure out how it works. |

Currently I get 3x all travel and restaurants on CSR and 2x groceries on Amex everyday card. I also get 5x points on gas, amazon and other random categories via various other chase cards.
I use chase and Amex points to cover flights or sometimes Hyatt hotels for vacations of roughly $5-$6k/year.
Tell me how a cashback card is better given my spending patterns. |
