Every box of pasta sold in the universe is from there. They kill other Mediterranean countries with olive oil. In fact probably every Mediterranean thing you own is from there. They with France dominate the luxury industry: clothes furniture. Even cars

4 Japan 5,428,813

For most of the countries listed, a majority all of the economic activity is domestic. Exports + imports constitute ~25% of USA GDP, 39% of China, 40% of India, etc.

When a majority of the economic activity is local, it makes more sense to adjust for local prices.

I can understand the necessity of PPP adjustment for per capita figures but why in the aggregate?

Because you would want to compare the two country's outputs when most of the production is produced and consumed locally. Nominal is more meaningful when a majority of production and consumption is traded, and ppp is more meaningful when a majority is domestic.

Imagine country A built an island with skyscrapers this year. Imagine country B also built an island of skyscrapers. The islands are identical. Everything is produced and consumed domestically in both countries.

Because of differences in currencies and market prices, perhaps due to beliefs about each country's future prospects, country A's island is worth 10x as country B's. Thus, country A's GDP is 10x country B's despite identical output.

Yes that's the basic idea but do you agree it is more useful to adjust in PPP terms for per capita rather than aggregate?

Each ranking is not so much a measurement of activity but an indicator of an idea.

GDP per capita - consumption in a country/the standard of living versus other countries

GDP aggregate - size of an economy/strength relative to the other economies

Does that also take into account that 40% of India's and China's economies are based on fraud and corruption?

It's more reflective of the real output of a country as everything is equalized without currency manipulation.

Like the poaster above notes, where GDP activity is most domestic, PPP is the way to go when comparing relative size of economies, a la China, India.
