The exact cause is unknown but appears to have been confusion and/or incompetence on the part of the pilots. They did things that the investigators couldn't figure out why they did it, even after the black boxes were recovered two years later. The airspeed sensor malfunctioned, causing the autopilot to turn off and revert to manual mode, which should have been a minor event for a qualified pilot and should not have led to the plane crashing into the ocean. They responded by pulling back on the control stick until the plane went into a stall, again for unknown reasons. Beyond the loss of life, the incident didn't enhance the reputation of Air France.
