did it firmly impress upon you the desire to scrimp, save, and spend a quarter of a million dollars to celebrate some weird chad getting to fuck your daughter in the ass for the rest of her life?

Ironic that someone like Steve Martin, who is talented and seems to have some creative integrity, made that gc reeducation film

The issue is more what everyone expected on him that was way out of line. Paying to fly in the IN-LAWS from Europe? No one does that. That's their problem. The mother and daughter just ran with everything being as expensive and elaborate as possible. Then when he finally snaps about the cost, he sees her reading a magazine for tips on how to make things cheaper. But it goes too far the other way. "Have a friend take the photos" etc. He's all "aw, I should just be quiet and let her have this ridiculously oversized wedding." There's middle ground there, you know. You don't need tot have swans walking around or a tulip border.

And don't even get me started on the actual wedding. The wedding planner leaves the FATHER OF THE BRIDE to handle a parking issue while he goes to attend the cake-cutting. WTF did they pay this guy for if not for damage control during the reception? There's not even an indication that they did a father-daughter dance. He misses the entire wedding and doesn't even get to eat. And just once the bride sort of wonders aloud to no one in particular "where's my dad?" No one actually tries to find him.

And there's a scene where he talks about "packing them into the church" but only 100 people being invited to the reception. First of all, it's incredibly rude to invite people to the ceremony and not the reception, Second, it looked like a LOT more than 100 people at the reception. Probably they didn't cut as many people as he wanted, but they kind of glossed over that.

I liked this movie as a kid b/c it seemed funny. I was horrified watching it as an adult. Especially after I got married.
