He "only" had the best thing that ever aired on SNL? Watching him go savage on the OJ Simpson trial week after week was a gift from God, and you're off your rocker if you think Kevin fucking Nealon could hold a candle to Norm.

Weekend Update became unwatchable trash after he left.

Like 3 jokes followed by a CRAZY WACKY GUEST appearance, followed by another crazy wacky guest meant to deflect from the fact that none of their staff or cast members are funny. Norm churned out dozens of jokes week after week, it was remarkable.

I would put a randomly selected compilation of Norm's weekend update jokes against any other standup's body of work.

Eddie Murphy probably has the best overall career of anyone who was also at some point an SNL cast member, arguably only Bill Murray can vie with him there. If the question is "best person who was also an SNL cast member" then he may have to be the winner.

if the question is best SNL member judged by their SNL career, not sure Eddie Murphy is it

far better. 70s SNL was great because the concept of the show was groundbreaking, but the substance was every uneven. they were firing on all cylinders late 80s - 1994 or so. show was consistently great. used to watch every saturday or would tape it if i was gonna be out.

There was a story in New York magazine, years ago, about how SNL in the mid-1990s was like a frat house. People like Janeane Garofalo couldn't get her skits on the show because it was a boys club. Shit like that.

Don't know what it says about frat houses, but early 1990s SNL was appointment television. Really great.

depends how you judge an impression. for accuracy sure fine darrell hammond wins. but where is the humor in that? i like the dana carvey approach. that you latch onto something the person does and amplify it. like his bush impression.

They were both amazing and each made the other funnier. The Perot-Stockdale car bit was hilarious, as were the Clinton-Bush-Perot debates.

EDIT: some of those were Phil Hartman, not Hammond. Both of them were amazing Clintons.

How come SNL had two people who did world-class Bill Cinton impressions but couldn’t find a single person to do Hillary right??

Kate Mckinnon's Hillary is just so *bad*.

All the cast members are bad. They're wacky and samey for everything. She would play Hillary like anyone else.

They can't do political comedy anymore-- since Obama really. It is obvious that they don't want to make fun of Democratic icons. Making fun of Obama was verboten, so they went after Biden. Even McKinnon's Hillary goes soft on her-- basically just gently pokes her for being ambitious.

there's nothing funny or remarkable about hillary so no impression of her is going to be good. mckinnon did the best she could with what she had. certainly way better than ana gasteyer or whoever played her in the 90s

it was the same way with obama.

clinton/trump type impressions are easy because they're larger than life people.

You could say the same think about GHWB, until Dana Carvey nailed the impression. And it is not a great impression-- he obviously does not look like him but he found that verbal tic and ran with it. They could have done that with Obama (Armisen tried but his heart wasn't in it) and Hillary.

Carvey made GHWB hilarious.

There wasn’t much funny about Reagan, either, but Phil Hartman got at least one hilarious sketch out of his impression (the one with the Girl Scout cookie sellers).

Norm MacDonald did a Bob Dole so funny they kept it going after the election.

Darrell Hammond nailed Al Gore.

None of these people were inherently hilarious, the cast was just better and PC hadn’t taken hold.

they're probably the best counterpoints to XO's "women aren't funny" thing. amazing that SNL had both of them for years and was still mediocre.

Women can certainly be funny in the right forum, although it’s rarer than men. Both of them were excellent on SNL in a variety of sketch settings, and were also both great in their sitcom vehicles.

Not sure either would be quite as amazing at standup, which is really a different kind of humor I think.

Reverse is true for, say, Norm MacDonald.

there are plenty of funny women, but they are much, much rarer then men. Adam Carolla's take on this is 180:

"The "are women funny" debate has grown very contentious. You're not worried about reactions to this?

I don't care. When you're picking a basketball team, you'll take the brother over the guy with the yarmulke. Why? Because you're playing the odds. When it comes to comedy, of course there's Sarah Silverman, Tina Fey, Kathy Griffin – super-funny chicks. But if you're playing the odds? No. If Joy Behar or Sherri Shepherd was a dude, they'd be off TV. They're not funny enough for dudes. What if Roseanne Barr was a dude? Think we'd know who she was? Honestly."

Both were in one of my favorite, underrated skits: Thugs

Phil Hartman and Martin Lawrence were on a Thugs show (like Cops) and were mugging people. They'd always run up to them and say "excuse me, do you have the time?" before punching them and taking their stuff. Then they'd complain that people lied to them about how much money they had. Norm was one of their victims, but of course he mostly just laid there cowering and trying to cover up his laughter lol.

I tend to weight that as sort of one skit. It did get repetitive, but it was a funny skit—they just did it over and over until the joke was old. Same thing with the school music teachers.

But Ferrell had some of the all-time best showstopper moments too, like the office scene where he attends a meeting in American Flag underwear.

I think it's easy to look at that time with rose-colored glasses. There were moments of genius, but plenty of awful/completely forgettable skits like with anything. I think their recurring skits were stronger, but not done so much as to be annoying.

Coffee Talk

The Chris Farley Show

Matt Foley

The Denise Show

Gap girls

Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer

Wayne's World

I'm sure there's a million more.

RDJ:

Lifetime Gross Total (55): $4,960,399,272

Stiller:

Lifetime Gross Total (38): $2,829,141,133

RDJ numbers include Marvel movies where he's just cameoing and are arguable but even excluding those he's still ahead.

RDJ starred in many, many arty films that earned jack but then hit it big with Ironman. Stiller's movies are more consistent $80-200M earners and also includes voice work for animated shit no one on xo ever saw.

A better thread is debating HOF for SNL. Can still get into the GOAT/Mt. Rushmore discussion with who is first ballot and Eddie Murphy v. Carvey v. Hartmann v. Ferrell v. Murray, Belushi, Farley, etc., but the toughest calls are really stuff like whether e.g. someone like Darrell Hammond did enough to get in. Same for David Spade. Seth Meyers might be the best debate bc he was head writer but also just so thoroughly mediocre in everything and would really be getting credit for letting Amy Poehler and Tina Fey do whatever they want. Debate whether Martin Short or Billy Crystal get for basically 2 GOAT level seasons.

It’s basically the test case for “can an impressionist make it as a one tool player?”I’m 100% with you on this, but arguably the show has always made clear that it wanted cast members to be more than great impressionists, see Jay Pharoah. Another way to make the argument is that while Hammond’s Clinton was clealty elite the show would not have missed him that much of Hartmann had lived and done his Clinton through 2001. It’s analogous to closers and kickers/punters getting into the HoF I.e. should be rare.

I can't even believe we're discussing Jay Pharoah and Hammond in the same breath here.

Pharoah is a one-trick pony they brought on to save Fred Armisen the embarrassment of black-facing to play Obama because they didn't have another skinny black guy in the cast. It's not an accident that his years in the cast are precisely the last 6 of the Obama era.

The sheer diversity of Hammond's impressions, many of which went beyond mere impressions into their own characters (I would argue that his Sean Connery, the absolute star of the Celebrity Jeopardy sketches, meets this standard) put him in his own league. I mean hell, he played Clinton, Gore (absolutely key as the straight man to Will Ferrell's slapstick GWB during the campaign), AND Cheney. The political skits alone put him among the greatest.

If your point is that Jay Pharoah wouldn't deserve to be in a HOF, yes you are correct. He was entirely forgettable and his most memorable character (Obama) is memorable primarily for not actually being a very funny portrayal of the person.

It’s not that they’re convincing. It’s that they are hilarious.

They managed to make Pharoah look and sound kinda like Obama but it still sucked because it wasn’t funny. All of Hammond’s impressions are very funny.

We are just 180 degrees off on this, I guess. The Dana Carvey GHWB and Perot impressions are some of his finest work in my view, Norm Macdonald’s wacky Bob Dole was probably the best thing he did outside of Weekend Update (and the best sketch of that recurring character, by the way, involved Norm opposite Hammond as Ted Koppel, whose timing was perfect), and I think GWB is what puts Will Ferrell over the top for SNL GOAT POTUS, too. The impressions, in particular the political impressions, were regularly the best part of the show in the 90s and early 00s, not because they were convincing but because they were very funny.

I'll try to find some darrel hammond stuff to watch but snl is really proprietary with their shit.

dana carveys impressioms were so hilarious in part because they werent very accurate. he would latch onto something about the person's demeanor and expand it like his george bush. more so he just absolutely killed it in every sketch. his comedic timing and delivery were unmatched. hartman had that too. I'm not gonna trash darrell hammond. rightly or wrongly i just don't hold him in as high a regard.

Just as a case in point, his Clinton is actually funnier AND more accurate than the Phil Hartman Clinton, even though the Phil Hartman Clinton is also rightly very well-remembered.

And he did exactly what you describe to create it, latching onto and using the ridiculous lip bite and thumb point Clinton did occasionally. Hartman imitates the voice (not as well as Hammond) but otherwise is just Phil Hartman dressed as the President. The “Warlords” sketch is probably Hartman’s best Clinton, and he’s great in it, but it’s funny mostly for the writing.

Phil Hartman / Eddie Murphy

As for the current cast, I like MacKinnon's absurdity and Beck Bennett has grown on me for whatever reason.

Pretty cool that Conan was on the writing staff during the late 80s - early 90s era which I think we can all agree was the GOAT POTUS era.

Conan seems to just constantly fuck up and somehow fall into a safety net.

-Dad is a professor at Harvard Medical School, Mom is a partner at Ropes and Gray

-Goes to Harvard, is President of the Harvard Lampoon at the same time Jeff Zucker happens to be President of the Harvard Crimson

-Gets hired by HBO straight out of college, writes for them for two years

-Gets hired by Lorne for SNL at age 24

-Wins an Emmy for comedy series writing at age 25

-Two years later he burns out, quits SNL, dumps his fiancee, and basically wanders around

-The showrunners for The Simpsons, basically the hottest show on TV at the time, call HIM to come write for them

-Lisa Kudrow, about to get famous, buys him an apartment in LA, starts fucking him, gets him out of his depression, and convinces him to try to perform instead of write

-The whole Carson/Letterman/Leno shit goes down and Lorne now needs someone to take Letterman's place. Lorne wants Conan to come produce the new show. Conan says "fuck you I want to host it," Lorne says "Excuse me" and Conan films an audition with a monologue in front of his Simpsons writers, and Lorne hires him on the spot at age 29

HBO show got cancelled. Gets straight onto SNL. Burns out at SNL and has no options. Simpsons calls him. Was going to quit that job to be a behind the camera producer at NBC before a miracle break lands him the Late Night job. Had to literally pay Fox himself to get out of Simpsons deal.

Late Night was pretty cool. Tonight Show was obviously a fiasco and TBS Conan has been pretty much on a downhill slide too.

Bottom line - he's creative and quirky and is definitely a legend but he got a ton of chances and luck that a lot of people wouldn't have gotten

more likely is that he is very talented and impressed people so they were willing to give him chances where he succeeded.

Lol at “Late Night was pretty cool.” This is how most people think about Conan, but it just shows how vastly underrated he will always be. People will also say “oh yeah the weird ginger potato nigger who couldn’t hack it on the Tonight Show.” But no matter what else he does Late Night is the first line of his CV. Letterman’s slow dissolution into irrelevance plus Leno building the ultimate nerf ball of comedy meant that Conan was the leading Late Night engine of comedic ideas (i.e. the most important comedy job on the planet) for almost a decade. It took until the Jon Stewart Daily Show came along and even that took until essentially 9/11 before anyone else came along to offer up an alternative. Not to mention giving people like Louis CK their first big jobs, and how well he collaborated with and showcased tons of other talents like Smigel. Conan at 1130 during the 90s was the longest stretch of that level of quality with those resources and at that volume of content that we have ever seen or will ever see in our lifetimes. He’s like the Andy Reid of comedy—always been physically repulsive and beta in a weird way that held him back from being recognized as the king, but he’s been this comedy nerd idol for 25 years.

’s just been brought to my attention that, while they were Harvard undergraduates, Jeff Zucker ’86 called the cops on Conan O’Brien ’85. (I never saw previous reports about this.) According to articles in both the Harvard Crimson and Yale Daily News, handcuffsZucker, then president of the university’s Harvard Crimson daily newspaper, dispatched the police to the Harvard Lampoon office after O’Brien, who was president of the campus humor magazine, organized a prank on his college rival — stealing an entire print run of the Crimson before it could be distributed. “He only forgave me when I gave him The Tonight Show,” Zucker told a Yale gathering back in 2005. The Harvard Crimson described the incident this way in a 2004 article about Conan landing The Tonight Show courtesy of Zucker: “O’Brien cut his teeth in comedy as president of The Harvard Lampoon, a semi-secret Sorrento Square social organization that used to occasionally publish a so-called humor magazine. In fact, O’Brien first met Zucker, his current boss, one day when O’Brien and the Lampoon editors stole all the copies of that morning’s Crimson. Zucker, then Crimson President, called the police and met O’Brien face to face while he was being arrested.” In 2001, Conan told The New Yorker this about the incident: “College pranks are supposed to be clever, but our rivalry with the Crimson had degenerated into us stealing something, Jeff calling the police, and the police making us haul it back,” said O’Brien. (Other Lampoon pranks on Zucker included “a fake phone-sex ad with Zucker’s dorm-room phone number. Zucker did not find any of this particularly hilarious.”) So what’s to glean from this Harvard history lesson? Yes, Jeff Zucker was a thin-skinned prick who didn’t understand comedy or know how to handle creatives even back then.

I wasn't impressed w her for a while b/c she had some of the worst recurring characters (Gilly, etc) and they were forced down our throats every week. When Bridesmaids was coming out, she did an interview where she talked about how she hated a lot of those characters, but Lorne kept making her do them. I gained a lot more respect for her after that.
