Pretty solidly focused on health and savings and generally living a modest and diligent lifestyle. Wife and I have similar goals on savings, frugality and living with discipline and focus.

Have some great and challenging hobbies. Always learning new things.

Solid diet and sleep cycle and working out and meditation.

Overall very satisfied and content. Wish I had more financial freedom but in many ways living frugally and with discipline is really rewarding in and of itself.

(1) Bed at same time every day. 10:00 pm. Wake up same time every day. 6:00 am.

(2) Some form of physical exercise every day. Ideally weight lifting and some cardio.

(3) Drink water all day. As much as I can.

(4) Cut out unnecessary sugar (candy, sodas, etc.).

(5) Cut out tobacco and any other drugs, including alcohol. It's hard. I had three very addictive substances to quit, and quit all three. Took about a year.

(6) Find mental clarity somehow. Meditating is good. Spending time thinking is good. Focus on people who were born worse off than you instead of better. Cutting out social media and severely restricting screen time was mandatory for me, but your mileage may vary.

I was at a coffee shop pretty recently and this guy in a scooter with limited motor control and short, mostly useless arms and legs ended up hanging out with me for like 20 minutes. He clearly had severe congenital birth defects and had never spent a second of his life independent or with "normal" physical function. I thought about how often I feel insecure, or upset, or have self pity because of X, or Y, or Z, none of which individually or together compared at all to the disabilities he faced daily. I thought about how I had done so much that he would never have even the slightest hope of doing - things most take for granted. i think about that guy often. Gave me a lot of insight on how happiness and satisfaction with life has more to do with your own mental clarity than it does your actual circumstances. So now I choose to be happy and choose to appreciate my gifts, regardless of how they compare to the gifts of others.

(7) Find people you care about and give a lot of yourself to them. For me it's my wife and parents, but that can vary depending on your circumstances. This should come after you've gotten your own life in order IMO.

The physical changes are the most important I think. Screen time, bad diet and bad sleep schedules do a lot of psychological damage that is hard to overcome with just psychological adaptations.

Have some whiskey with my dad or a glass of wine with friends every once in a while, but never to the point of feeling drunk.

Honestly booze and drugs just feel awful. I don't understand why i spent so many years wrapped up in that nonsense. It sucks because americans are so obsessed with this stuff it's hard to go out with friends and deal with a bunch of drunks, but i find the disciplined life more rewarding so it's worth it.

Carbs get you on this up and down cycle all day where calorie control becomes challenging. I eat a lot of meat and cheese throughout the day and have a big salad for lunch to get good greens and fiber and some nutrients. but calorie control is still a daily struggle to be honest.

I went to key west a few years ago, and I met this cool as hell black dude from my town. His group and mine went out several times that trip, and we kept up after coming home. Invited me to a BBQ at his house (it was a bunch of hood bros and me), everyone was super cool and we had a blast. Then he got into a car wreck and became a paraplegic.

Right after his accident, from the hospital, he put on social media that he was paralyzed, but that he would walk again. This was like maybe 5 years ago. Since then he puts videos of himself working with physical therapists every day. Very sad to watch. But over the years and particularly lately, he is posting videos of himself legit walking (although with leg braces and holding onto a rail). He's always positive. He can crawl using his legs, albeit awkwardly.

Its pretty fucking amazing to have seen him go through all of this, and then his pretty incredible recovery, and I believe that he will eventually walk again (never normally, but he will walk). I realize that no matter how much bad shit I go through, I'll (hopefully) never go through anything as hard as that. And look at how he handled it - faced it head on and is (in the process of) beating it in a way.

But all I need to do is read a sad story about children/parents dying of cancer/accidents etc and realize how lucky I am every single day that nothing tragic happens. Too many people take their health and families for granted. I threw out my back and couldn’t pick up my kids and could barely walk for 3-4 days. Imagine cancer or paralysis from a car wreck.

Everyday that is uneventful is objectively 10/10 because it could literally change in a second.

Mostly though I'm just very dispositionally inclined to be happy. Maybe even that's not true (since it's not like I'm living in squalor or anything and still chill about it), but (1) I definitely am dispositionally not inclined to have much stress; (2) I don't have the ennui, perpetual dissatisfaction, or thinly veiled mental illness that a lot of decently successful people have; and (3) I enjoy being a lawyer, which really is a sign of 'bad' psychological features, but for me (since I've got those features anyway and have always had them) feels like I've fallen into a vocation that feels natural and plays to my strengths.

Just minor worries, really, nothing too consuming. Just the realization that another life is joining the family and that's always a bit daunting. Other than that life is good. We are fortunate in this regard. It's just passing by way too quickly.
