I got very little help financially, and while at times it was really (really) hard, because they are wealthy I knew that i was never going to get in real trouble and I took risks. It forced me to learn finances, learn how to manage debt & loan, etc.
lol they didn't even pay for my law school, I had a family member clear my loans via his will when he died. |

That being said, it was harder than it had to be for me and I did some stupid shit for money when I was younger. I literally panhandled on a road trip once. I drove a car so long that it was falling apart until it finally caught fire and burnt to the ground on the side of the road. I used to spend Saturdays catching fish and crabs for dinner to save money, plus god dammit I will never eat ramen again as long as I live. It seemed unnecessary, my folks had plenty of money.

Then he moved out and bought his own mixed-use building but needed to borrow a couple hundred grand from me because "I'm too old to have a mortgage", whatever that means, and I lent it to him out of the blind trust of a son but also believing he would pay it back relatively quickly. Since then the property has doubled in value but he still refuses to pay me the money back or take out a mortgage to do so, almost a decade later.
They were great parents otherwise, I was extremely close to them before with full trust etc. so this has seriously damaged my relationship with them.
I don't know what the answer is, friend, people are flawed and life is shit and then we die I guess? |
