i've seen corp associates get secunded to clients for a year or two before rotating back to the firm

at my firm the partners offered to send me to a bankruptcy clerkship for a year (with the understanding that i'd move from the litigation department to the restructuring department upon my return) but i decided against it

Returning to the private sector after funemployment is hard.

Public sector generally doesnt care.

Are you seen as a flight risk / not sufficiently fearful?

If the economy is good and firms are hiring laterals and you have subs story, like you were caring for a sick relative or working as an adjunct at a law school--then yes, it's possible.

If the economy had even a burp while you're gone--you're done here.

If you’ve only been at one firm I think so, yes. Just make up a decent cover story like you had a crisis in the family that you had to attend to.

You need to have a good reason for the gap. You should get jacked during the gap year and have recruiters submit your resume with before and after pictures.

lifehack: sneak back into 2L OCI every year at ur law school

"fake" ur transcript by photoshopping the date that u graduated/will "graduate"

u have to give up ur a few class years in biglaw but u can hit the reset button whenever u want with this one trick

You should just start looking and take an offer from new firm. Negotiate starting date 4 months out because you’re on a big case / deal and you’re irreplaceable or whatever. Then take a few weeks off for a vacation. Don’t even have to go anywhere. Take unpaid leave if you want to (for medical reasons or something) Give notice at 2.5 months. Then take the time between months 3 and 4 to yourself.

Oh and don’t go into another bk group. Switch areas. Your life will be better.

Or just negotiate the 4 months (longer than that would be hard probably) and give notice the next day. But you’ll lose out on 3 months of pay that you could otherwise collect.

i'm talking about weighing the cost-benefit of (a) taking significant time off and returning as a fully committed bk guy v (b) taking much less time off and transitioning into a new practice only to get shitcanned due to ITE

i think taking time off and returning to a strong counter-cyclical practice area that i remain committed to (but for whatever extraneous circumstance demanded my leave) might be the better bet if i'm expecting two-three years of a real shit economy
