This report doesn't include banker bonuses, but also doesn't factor in 40 hour weeks vs. 80 hour weeks so end conclusion is still right. Data scientists are #1!

Good news for data science grads

Updated 2 hours ago

When it comes to entry-level paychecks, graduates heading to Wall Street are losing their edge. Tech- and data-focused jobs are offering bigger salaries to recent grads, according to Bloomberg. Data scientists can expect to start their careers making the most, with $95,000 per year. The big bucks are thanks to high demand for the expertise, which is applicable across industries. Software engineers and product managers follow closely behind, with entry-level positions starting at $90,000 and $89,000, respectively. Investment banking analysts can still plan to start strong, with a starting salary of $85,000.

You don't invent the algorithms, which is what machine learning (a CS concentration) and stats are about. You just use the algorithms in new & insightful ways.

Two engineering degrees & spent 3 years in a CS phd program before dropping out. I have a lot of experience with high-dimensional data analysis and applying machine learning techniques to extremely large data sets (think hundreds of millions of records).

here's a recent one and it's for a bank (sellside) and underpaid cause it's credit.

the equity guys at hedge funds get 2-3x this. cut it by a few years and it's still $500k-800k average salaries.

not to pull a JJC here but

1) IBD analysts make 85k base plus a bonus of anywhere from 30-60k depending on the firm/market/performance/etc.

2) this doesnt take future earnings into account. IBD careers are built on putting 'your time in' early and seeing your hours improve (somewhat) and your pay (markedly) increase. a guy 10 years into IBD who's a VP is making 300-400k, a sum data scientists aren't making just doing their usual thing on R and python or whatever

data science is a useful skill and a skill that commands $$$ but IBD = rent seeking, and nothing competes with rent seeking in ameriKKKa

true but

1) IBD works 80-90 hours a week versus half that for data scientists

2) look at the jobs i posted. hedge funds are secretive and won't post their salaries but ask nutella how much their guys get paid. it's more than her since they're front office, but expect $800k-$1mm+ with a good year. That's 5-8 years out which is faster than it takes to become a senior Managing Director in IBD with a solid book of business.

A 2018 Burtch Works study of data science salaries reported the latest salary trends based on experience:

Entry-level data scientist salary. Despite a recent influx of early-career professionals, the median starting salary for a data scientist remains high at $95,000.

Mid-level data scientist salary. The median salary for a mid-level data scientist is $128,750. If this data scientist is also in a managerial role, the median salary rises to $185,000.

Experienced data scientist salary. The median salary for experienced data science professionals is $165,000—while the median salary for experienced manager-level professionals is considerably higher at $250,

i was at a hedge fund and did a python bootcamp

but was easy for me since the fund wanted someone with fundamental knowledge, even moreso than position above which says they heavily prefer at least 3 years of long/short experience

my current place REQUIRES years of long/short experience and at the time, the data scientist part of the job was "heavily preferred".
