an actual ground invasion of iran would be a major national project that would probably have to accept the loss of a few dozen planes along with several ships either sunk or damaged, and probably c. 3-4K deaths just to secure the coastline and the coastal missile sites.

there is no national will for something like this, and thus, it probably won't happen.

i doubt it's actually being SERIOUSLY discussed. the more you look at the actual geography and geopolitics of the region, the worse of an idea it becomes. the military knows this.

it is widely acknowledged that the iraq and afghanistan war made the US military weaker in various important ways. iran would take those trends and accelerate them, especially since our national debt is already over 100% of GDP.

it's built into the war calculations, i would presume. an actual serious war with iran would probably lead to collateral wars in lebanon, iraq, and parts of syria. soft targets like gulf shipping and eastern saudi pipelines/oil facilities would get smashed up.

on the upside, $250/barrel oil benefits the remaining oil producers, including the US, canada, russia, etc. it will also clear up a lot of unnecessary traffic on american roads, making driving more pleasant.

A ground war with Iran would be a bigger undertaking than our invasion of Europe in WW2. Staging units and getting then into Iran en masse would be incredibly difficult, especially since I assume Turkey and KSA would laugh in our faces at the thought of supporting this.

KSA is a big supporter of war on Iran.

Does every scenario call for an invasion of Iran to reach Tehran?

Are there limited scenarios in which thousands of ground troops would need to do fighting?

i've seen speculation that most staging would be done from iraq and from the south - ie, via carrier groups in the gulf/indian ocean. there would probably need to be about 6 carrier groups involved to provide overlapping dense anti-missile coverage for each other.

At any given time we have at max 4 carrier groups available for deployment. The rest are in some form of maintenance or yard status. Getting half our CVN force ready for deployment would be a huge undertaking in itself.

it would be a major national project. as i recall, Iraq II had 4 carrier groups in theater at the time of the actual assault. iran would definitely need a couple more. there would also need to be a reconfiguration of the rotation/maintenance schedules in order to have other carrier groups ready to relieve each other.

we'd probably be looking at half-a-trillion dollars in short-term expenses even if everything goes shockingly well.

aerial bombing is good at taking out large fixed defensive positions and highly-visible targets like tanks and vehicles. the problem with iran is that its terrain is a goddamned mess:

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/b5/Iran_Topography.png

compare that to the vast flatlands of iraq.

iran has an unknown number of small, portable anti-armor weapons like the russian kornet, which means that US vehicle/tank movements into iran are going to get lit up for a while by small, mobile groups of assailants using the mountains for coverage.

Other way around. There aren’t countless crazy Sunnis and Arabs milling about in Iran.

Unless the Iranian regime has some crazy amazing guerilla force prepared to strike (which the CIA hasn’t sniffed out). The Iranian regime is really lame though so I doubt they have some strategic grand plan.

I’m not saying that. I’m saying the us military and intel apparatus would destroy whatever resistance Iran put up, and presumably would not stupidly let a post invasion guerilla war pwn them like in Iraq.
